Homeless Lottery Winner

Just saw this on the news and thought I'd post it for those who haven't seen it yet...

There's also a fund set up with over $6K donated thus far.

Cool story...very moving.

I saw the video and back story a few days ago on T.V. Apparently, the guy that gave the ticket to the homeless man is a notorious on-line prankster and, in this case, his prank was to simply benefit the man without the man's knowledge so as not embarrass or humiliate him. The prankster was completely caught off-guard by the reaction of the "winner" and the sharing of his "jackpot", as shown in the video. Still, he received negative feedback from people who saw it as exploiting a homeless person for the sake of posting a video.

It still impressed me.

While on the surface its an extremely nice gesture, it could have been a death sentence for the homeless guy. Getting that much money, and if he's got drug or alcohol problems he could buy more than he could have ever imagined. Also, he'd probably tell his "friends" who would certainly try and take the rest of the money from him.

Yep! Money can only fix the problems cause by a lack of money and I'm guessing this man's issues aren't about money... I am just guessing...

When we were filming Pirates 2 in Dominica we met with the tribal chief about hiring members of his tribe as cannibals. We told him we'd pay them $100/day. To the Chief's credit he told us that his people had never seen that kind of money and the first week we'd probably find half of them dead the day after payday due to them being able to buy huge amounts of rum. He recommended $10/day which was fat city to them. To his credit, he didn't ask for the other $90/day/person to be given to him.

it would require that our leaders actually respect and care for us.... not going to happen.

To follow up on that story, that Chief got voted out before we filmed, not because of us, and a new one was elected before we filmed. The new Chief didn't want us to hire his tribe as cannibals, he thought it made them look bad, even though 300 years ago they were in fact cannibals. The tribe voted him out and re-elected the old Chief. We got our cannibals. I've posted pics of our cannibals here before. They had a great time, they all spoke the Kings English.

To a conservative viewpoint, I don't need my "leaders" deciding what is good or bad for me. But in this particular case, I did recognized and appreciate the tribal elder chief's wisdom regarding his "family". It was a totally different World there.

For us, it was an interesting dilemma about free markets, environmental justice, sustainable societies, justice for individuals and other societial issues (who got work/who didn't, etc.) We spent a whole lot of hours and time thinking about the societal impacts of bringing a couple of $Hundred Million movies to Dominica and St. Vincent. I'm not sure, but I believe we ended up giving the "extra" $90/hour/person to a peer-reviewed training/trust fund that was administered by Disney and Dominica to the tune of many millions of dollars.

I'll bet you a dollar (because that is about all I care) that you didn't think Disney actually did that making movies. I work for the best company in the World. We do more environmental, ecological, conservation work than any other big Corporate Rat (mouse) in the World.
