Looking at a VW Tiguan for our daughter...
We are looking for a small used SUV for our daughter while she's at university. She likes the Tiguan Ms Rocket has and wants one like it. There is only one around here for sale and it's had three owners, repo'd and sold at auction. I don't think I'd buy it with a screaming deal.
What are your thoughts on Tiguans in general? Are they reliable? What other car would you compare to the Tiguan? Pre-Owned - Search Used Cars in Mt. Pleasant | Low Country Volkswagen CARFAX Vehicle History Report for this 2011 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN S/SE/SEL Last edited by A930Rocket; 03-06-2014 at 07:23 PM.. |

Sounds like a good trade.

Buy them, sell them
|
Haha
My Jessie has one, probably a model that they don't sell in the US, but ours is called a 132TSI. She loves it! 180hp, 6-speed manual, AWD, leather, auto everything (including parallel parking) etc. It's a great car to drive and is good on gas mileage. Servicing is a little expensive, but it's been absolutely reliable, aside from some early high oil consumption which seems to have settled.

Crv or rav4. No way I would be getting a vw product.
Heck, look at the cx5 with the skyactive engine. If I was in the market that would be the one I would purchase.

Like the style of the Volvo xc/60. Same class as the Tiguan. I have had good experiences with Volvo SUVs.

No long term experience, but I had one as a rental in Tahoe. It handled the deep snow like a champ, even with me hooning about in manual mode. Cool little car in my book.

Try going new? I bought my 13' golf tdi at 0%, plus free service for 36k. She'll love you forever if she gets to pick out the color.

Can't afford new right now even with the great deals.
This is a car she'll have for two more years of school and the start of a new job (I hope). Quote:

I like the Volvo's as well. I'm going to talk to the shop that worked on our old MB. They service Volvo's as well.

What's your budget? If she's not going to have the car more than 3-4 years, why not look at at lease on a Honda CR-V or a Mazda CX-5?

Rav4's are really popular at Arizona state. Heck I've even went out with a gal that had one.
jetta Mk4, and mk5's are also extremely popular. It's not rare to see four or five parked in a row...

My Wife has a 2011 tiguan we bought new and so far it has been a reliable car. They do have a thing where sometimes the key fob will not unlock the door. It has enough power for her but her overall gas mileage is not great at just over 20mpg. She loves the heated seats and the 4Motion (4wd)and its is small enough for her to park easily. I definitely would check the web about the key fob problem though.

Might be looking at one of these this weekend too, can't hang with the constant little issues on the Cayenne (and how much they cost to fix).
Might be the definition of insanity to go with the VW, but at least parts seem quite a bit cheaper.

Why not buy a Cayenne and pay the same amount in repair costs?

We bought a 2012 (old front end) new and haven't had any real problems with it. Gas mileage around town is about 20, but on the highway as high as 29. It handles really well and has a nice ride, so I can't complain. My only beef is the bright blue they offered in 2010 wasn't offered in 2012, so we went with grey. Now every time the misses looks at it she says we should have gotten a used 2010......whatever, you can't ever win. :-)
