My Formula Vee
After many years and much work we ran it yesterday for the first time!
I hauled it out of mountain top storage several years ago. The owner and I tore it all down in a day with big plans... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1394425852.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1394425894.jpg Fast forward to a couple years ago. Owner had to move and lost interest. He gave it to me and I continued the project. I cleaned and painted everything. It is still vintage legal and unmodified. They all run 1963 1200cc motor, trans and suspension. With fan and generator removed, flywheel lightening and balancing 60-62hp is not uncommon from the 40 horse motor running a single baby Solex. |
Wow, it bet it would be fun to drive. Just a step up from a go-cart I guess.
Well done. |
It's like a big go-kart, yes.
1000#'s with driver! |
Here's how it looked after tear down:

The fun part!!:

We fixed that. I have set of new rims and tires for the car for next time. Hankook c-90 radial slicks. http://i944.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps890585af.jpg I will follow up soon!! Hope you enjoyed the little peek into my hobby. SmileWavy |
Looks like a really fun build and a blast to drive.
|
That video with the body off makes me really want one. :)
|
It really is quite amazing, being that low, seeing the tires and steering.
I was ready to take the course at my a/x school/test day ( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-autocross-track-racing/793311-trackmasters-x-school-13-march-8th.html ) when the wire from the coil to the ignition switch lit off from end to end. I didn't have time to fool with it, but next time should be pure madness!! |
Here's the first start after assembled:

I thought driving my school's Formula Electric with the body off was way cool too. Seeing everything working. Ariel Atoms must be a similar feeling.
|
It's like putting on overalls made out of roll cage.
 |
Cool!
I always wanted to try one of those. |
Very cool, Trek.!
Heres my old Caldwell D13. Cool little car, but I really hated the driving position in it. Basically flat on your back with your head propped up a little. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1394453776.jpg |
Trekkor, Stop mess'n around. You've already missed SFR's the first event!
|
Saweet!! One of the coolest things posted in a while.
|
Lucky you lost all that weight, or you would have had to butter your hips to fit in the thing. I guess the spec Miata just moved from the back burner to the maybe not category.
Dig the FV, guess we should have gotten the place on a whole acre instead of a quarter. Just as well though, increases the chances of staying married for me. |
Nice Vee. Minis and Formula Vees were a great way to get racin'on a budget.
A lot of people started out in F Vee and went on to bigger things, thanks for posting. |
Do you have an update for us?
|
Weather is getting nicer, time to put it all together KT and run it on a track!
|
Looks like a load of fun!
|
Ya know, unless yer racing in a specific class that pro-hibits it, a 2180 will fit just as nice as that 1200cc engine.
|
Really cool, looks like a ton (1/2 ton?) of fun.
|
I'm going to put a hopped up 914 motor in it and a/x the thing first off.
I just got back from an 8 day trip to L.A., so now I can work on some projects. |
I had forgotten the typ1 uses the same transaxle-engine bolt circle as the later type 4's and porsche flat 6's.
I think it needs a PMO'd 911 2.7 out back there. Surely someone has done that. It wouldn't do good thing for the weight distribution but that could be accounted forwith fat rear tires |
Really cool, please post a pic with the body and new rims and tires,
|
Really nice work! Have fun. Here is mine, run in vintage in the PNW. Racing season is just around the corner. Have fun. Have you thought of running it with VARA, CSRG, whoever else is down there?

This was one of mine. 1600cc.
It was a lot of fun! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1396969377.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1396969361.jpg note: pic #1 still has the previous owner's name on it. pic was taken the day I bought it. |
Thanks for posting pics of your cars
