Found a jar of pickled Asparagus that is 10 years old, no signs of the seal being broken, wondering if it is still safe to eat or should it be trashed? they were great back in the day especially in a bloody Mary

mmmmmmmmm, botulism.

nynor 03-12-2014 04:49 PM

botulism won't grow in vinegar.

rusnak 03-12-2014 04:51 PM

I say take a little nibble on one in the name of science.

slakjaw 03-12-2014 04:52 PM

Open it man. If it smells bad don't eat it.

This is an important rule to remember. If it smells bad don't eat it.

slodave 03-12-2014 05:03 PM

Is a good jar of pickled asparagus actually supposed to smell good?

On one hand, its ok to eat and you save $4.

On the other, it's not and you end up with projectile vomiting/diarrhea.

Go for it.

porsche4life 03-12-2014 05:20 PM

Why not just make some fresh and not risk it?

nynor 03-12-2014 05:28 PM

10 year old pickled asparagus... seems like it would be mush by now.

What the heck, I opened it, I cut one of the spears up to see how the center looked and it is cool not mushy at all now all I have to do is make the wife a drink....

^This.

This cracks me up, when my wife moved in a year ago she went through my kitchen... she found some stuff dated 2009/2010... she would stick it in my face like she just found rat poison...

However don't think I would sample anything ten years old... what is your health worth?

We used to find old discarded C-rations out on some of the Army posts I was sent to. If the can was OK, the stuff inside was OK.

My girlfriend is always gettin' onto me for eating out of date stuff. It says "Sell By:". Not "Eat By:".
I always tell her "It's been cold the whole time". She says she gonna put that on my grave marker...

Eat the Spargel! I bet it's good. I'd be willing to guinea pig it for ya.

eating 10 year old food seems illogical.

My father frequently eats fruit that has been frozen that long. He's still alive and kicking.

At a former job we had a community fridge in the break room. One of the single guys would happily eat the food others were going to throw out. The ladies would bring leftovers from home and not finish it. Over the weekend they were ready to throw it out. Everyone learned to just call George up front. He happily ate it all. Some of the others would bring leftovers from home just to give him rather than throwing it out. He was a 2 legged garbage disposal.

He finally met his match with some 10 day old fried chicken. He was out sick for 3 days.

DRONE 03-13-2014 09:14 AM

I would have expected the vinegar to be cloudy and have a bad smell or at least have spots all over the aspargus but nothing Maybe I'll just have 1

930LDR 03-13-2014 09:28 AM

If you have to ask... you probably shouldn't be eating it.
