The binary-box.

No I am not talking about computers. I'm talking about the two metaphorical boxes that a handful of people on this forum have developed for reacting to any given topic. That is, for any given topic those people have room for neither a middle ground, nor a different perspective; only room for pro or con.

Because of this binary-box model of the world, the simpletons grab hold of any posters slightly negative or slightly positive comments and run them into one of the two binary-box extremes.

Same thing happens for personalities here. That is, after losing a point or 12, the simpletons respond to any individual poster in a GW Bush fashion of " you are either with me or against me." Which of course has the simpleton chiming in with pissing-contest retorts based on who made a statement.

meh. Thankfully most here can separate arguments from persons, and can imagine more than black and white. But sheesh, the simpletons are annoying.

Well my reaction is 0. I could change my reaction and agree with you but then we both would be wrong. ;)

I like to tell people 4 in binary unless they are English, then they get a 12.

Count binary on your hand, you should get it...

ckissick 03-17-2014 12:46 PM

So, you're saying there are only 10 responses: pro or con.

widebody911 03-17-2014 12:46 PM

There are 10 types of people who understand binary...

You are so right! Why can people be more like Al Gore, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Capt Zero...all paragons on compromise and unity with folks of opposing viewpoints.

I don't think that's our culture... I think it's the inevitable conclusion of our for-profit media that must segregate and generate reaction in order to sell. Only the loudest are heard. Only the extreme viewpoints are published.

Imagine a news article "GOP and Dems have similar view on Guatemala policy, but GOP favors 5% more investment in infrastructure."

Nope!

What he have is:

"7 ways your cat might be killing you..." and
"I saw this bear in the forest and you won't believe what happened next!"
"Dems say GOP leaders should all be hanged for treason!"

It's all BS. All.OF.IT.

70SATMan 03-17-2014 06:57 PM

Shoot,,,, I was expecting some cartoons to go along with the OP.

And the fact that there are folks out there that swallow it whole, then regurgitate it to others...

Useful idiots, and the ones who create the propaganda to begin with laugh all the way to the bank. When recitation of talking points replaces actual thought, there's no point in having a discussion. Easier just to fetch the talking points from the original source.
