So I guess you'll pick it up then. Now that the police say its clear document it and get it titled. Enjoy.
Back in the Early seventies a friend of mine sold a gorgeous 1970 Trans-Am Super Duty to an Australian. They immediately loaded it into a container for shipment to Oz. Since my friend was showing the car and didn't want to risk a theft he had left the title at home. The buyer said that he'd drop by and pick it up. Never heard from him. Guess they didn't need the title in Oz. Dan |

So I got the advice here, years ago, about buying a motorcycle- old Kawasaki 500 twin- I wanted to buy it for a fun summer fixer-upper, but it didn't have a title, just a bill of sale from someone to that owner, along with an old registration slip from the previous owner. I had been told the same thing- get the VIN, call the highway patrol office and have them tell you if it was stolen or not.
So I drove 3 hours out to this guy's house, looked over the bike- it was all there and pretty good condition, so I was willing to buy it, but I wanted to check the VIN as told to first. I had the highway patrol's number written down so I called and said "Hi I am thinking about buying this motorcycle and I was wondering if I could check and see if the VIN number had been reported stolen" They said "I'm sorry, we don't give out information on VIN numbers". I responded saying that I didn't want any information, I just wanted to give them the VIN and wanted them to give me a "yes" or "no" answer to whether or not it had been reported stolen. They said sorry, we can't do that. I was confused. I ended up not buying that motorcycle. I always regretted not just going ahead and buying it. I wouldn't have registered it... I really just wanted it to tinker with, maybe throw the motor in an old shifter kart frame I had.

1) A properly signed / released title from the last owner 2) A bill of sale from the last registered owner to you; notarized 2 kinds of vehicles I would never buy. A chopped top car with no glass and a car with no title

The weather has finally broke here, and I went and looked the car over real good last night. The last time I saw it, it was 200 degrees below zero, dark outside, and by the time I walked the quarter mile to the car , my feet were numb.
It is a 74 911, halfway assembled, rock solid, zero rust, complete, but...... There are no vin numbers. The plate is missing, and there was a funny aluminum plate riveted to where the vin is usually stamped to the body. I got curious , and ripped this aluminum plate off, and the entire section of that part of the body has been neatly cut out. My gut tells me that this car was not the "stolen car" per se, but it may have donated its title, and vin plate to another vehicle, but who really knows? Would you still touch it?

Race car, or sheet metal donor project. The only secret numbers that I know of are the serial number on the knee bar, dash, and parcel shelf. They are not vin numbers, and as far as I know, only Porsche ag , can connect these #'s with a vin. I did find the numbers under the knee bar.

This may be an over simplistic approach, but first try Porsche, and see if they can (or will) supply you with a VIN that matches the number under the kneepad. If they do, and you have police connection, see if they can run it through the system to see if it comes up stolen or not. If it's a good result, see if it can be run to see if that VIN is registered anywhere.
It couldn't hurt to try. Best case, you get a cool project, worst case, you walk away with no egg on your face.

Now in 993 land ...

I would not haul this to my house unless I was determined to just go ahead and part it out and scrap the tub in private. I'd figure out what's up before bringing it home. Otherwise it'd be "receiving stolen property". Keep us posted. Never a dull moment on PPOT!

Damn you guys worry too much. Take it and see if you can get the vin sorted/registered. The PD couldn't give a flying eff about that thing, if it does pop back as stolen then you made the rightful owner happy. Yea yea I know, someone here has a brother whose friends uncles ex-wifes boss got nabbed when he tried to register a '66 mustang that was stolen 30 years earlier... No one cares, get the car.

![]() It is loaded, and ready to go. I could not resist washing it off a little. It was just down the road from the car wash. I spoke with an officer from the vehicle theft division, and a local police officer, and they basically set my worries aside. I am going to move it tonight, or tomorrow. Of course, if it ends up to be stolen , I will make sure to see that it gets to were it belongs. I think contacting Porsche will be my next step.

![]() As you know the old guy could gave sold it very quickly for a few grand. There has to be some dark history in its past but still worth hauling home. I would have done the same. Good luck
