Just picked up a new (to me) grocery getter...

2005 Mercedes-Benz AMG E55.

Engine: 5.4L Supercharged V8
Horsepower: 469@6100rpm
Torque: 516 lb·ft@2650rpm
0-60 time: 4.7sec

112k on the odometer

I foresee a bunch of extra trips to the grocery store (and the gas station)

Nice purchase... I'm always checking those out in the for sale ads. Somewhat weary of the maintenance cost and AMG stamped parts on a 100k mile vehicle but have been very close on a number of occasions.

Good to know the ice cream will still be frozen when you get home. Nice ride!

I was close to buying the earlier version of that. Nice hot rod for sure.

In the spirit of my current "grocery getter" shopping situation... One must ask the obvious.

Price?

Nice!

Where in Hampton Roads are you?

I spent my youth in Norfolk and still have a brother living in Portsmouth with a business in Suffolk.

Cool area (except for the dang cold weather!)

These supercharged AMGs are a ton of fun to tool around town in, but they will bring you to your knees as soon as something goes wrong. Enjoy the honeymoon :)

After a bit of haggling I got it for $14,250; or about $2,000 less than a new Kia Rio. NADA books it at around $20K but they are selling for less - mostly between $16,500 and NADA price. It's a one owner car, even still had the window sticker included with the documentation. It cost the original owner $87,000 dollars in 2005. I don't know, but he may have paid even more than that since these cars often sold above MSRP. It has seats that massage you while driving for cryin' out loud! :D

2014 Kia Rio ($15-17K)

I've heard alot of that; believe me. Alot coming from the people on the MBworld forum. Obviously, I'm hoping for the best. Aside from the engine, brakes and the suspension (I think), they are very similar to the standard models. I do my own maintenance and repairs on all my vehicles. I'm also 45 and I don't 'plan' to drive it like a 'bat outta hell' 24/7 so maybe that will help a little.

Speaking of miles, not sure if I mentioned it but I had to cross three states to get it - about 300 miles (mid Atlantic - the states are close together lol). Since I didn't have a plate I went on the Va DMV website and printed out a trip permit for five bucks. It's the best deal going. I drove most of the way back and my wife drove the last hour and a half (after all, it is HER car). Guess who gets pulled over by a state trooper 5 minutes from the house for not having a plate? Trooper took about a minute to make sure all was legit and apologized for 'wasting our time'.

Nice! I came close on several occasions to buying a W210 E55. I can't imagine a similar car with 100 more HP.:)

petrolhead611 03-19-2014 04:12 AM

My sister has the same car, but in silver. She just had the suspension replaced and the cost here in UK was eye-watering.

ChemMan 03-19-2014 04:34 AM

w211 chassis E55 AMG!!! Sweet. Hoping to have one someday.

They are fun cars! If you fill up and smell gas afterwards, park the car and check the fuel pumps. They have a tendency to leak at the top and sometimes the wiring harness will have a burn on it as well. You can get rebuilt Airmatic shocks from Arnott Industries.
