the ability to "leave well enough alone"

it eludes me.

maybe that is why i own a 1980's Porsche 911. i've been known to tap that non adjustable WUR back and forth, chasing the perfect control pressure for hours and hours. i cant leave a crooked bumper sticker alone. you should have seen me setting my rear ride height, by reindexing the bars..haha..it took hours. i get a thought into my head, and i wont sleep. i just lay there running scenarios thru my head.

i'm a tinkerer. just yesterday, i was at a bowshop. buying some arrows. i noted that the owner just set up his chronograph. hey now!! he let me shoot an arrow thru it. darn it!! my bow is slow! 263 feet per second. the owner, let out a "umph?" and took my bow. we put it on a scale and measured how much weight it took to draw back. 67 lbs. i should have 72ish, according to spec. honestly, i bet that 5lbs missing will gain me only about 9 feet persecond.

my bow is a lazer now. super accurate, super smooth..but that nagging feeling has crept in. angst! with compound bows, you release the strings and cables to twist and untwist them, looking for the sweet spot.

ignorance is bliss. i blame the internet. if i wanted to DIY this i need to build tools and buy tools. about $700 i think. maybe i will just ignore this one.

you a tinkerer?

(i am going to weight my arrow with a better scale..maybe they are super heavy :D)

There's a saying in surgery: the opposite of good, is better.

You remind me of my wife. She's OCD too.

Part of the reason why I sell cars - they are done. I have trouble staying interested without a project.

My friend a plastic surgeon said her mentor told her, "The enemy of good is great."

Perfection is supposed to be elusive. Obsession is to be avoided.

onewhippedpuppy 03-19-2014 08:07 AM

Don't let perfection become the enemy of good enough.

I agree with Noah930. I've heard the saying as the opposite of Good, is Great. I hated the
book, "Good to Great". That being said sometimes I also get something in my mind and I struggle to get rid of it.

Vash, tinkering in Archery might not be a good thing. Sometimes things can go south, quick. Off topic a bit..... how old are your string/cable? They have stretched and twisting your cable will get some lbs back. I have some friends that have been in Archery for a long time, I'm the one always asking questions about center shot etc. Perfection baby, it can ALWAYS be better.

Brand new. I cut my string by accident trying to install a smaller peep. I wanted the peep circle to fit my bow sight circle perfectly. (See the theme?). My bow shop is the opposite of me. No draw board, broken chronograph, and can't find their bow scale. They literally put the strings on and sent me home. I had to go back and get them to sync my cams. We syncd them pretty good, almost great.

If I had a bench top bow press, I would go insane. Draw board and scale I can build up with parts I've saved up.

I'm gonna leave it alone for now. Spring turkey is here in 10 days.

Oh, this isn't good... Talking Archery, then you mention spring turkey!!!
Get the peep that you can swap out the "inner" part for different diameter holes. In NH, we still have s-loads of snow!!! Heard my first gobble yesterday!!

I'm a tinkerer for sure. I can, however, leave well enough alone when the situation calls for it. There are times , though when it has to be right , No matter the cost, or time it takes.
I often find that the pursuit of perfection paralyzes some people. They obsess over the small details so much, that they can never get anywhere.

I just bought ride hight adjustable coilovers of my Miata... Lord help me.

Installed new radio, power amp and door speakers in same Miata... preparing to tear everything apart for the third time to find the elusive best sound possible.

Go for the eye shot on those turkeys. Preserve the meat and hide.

Head416 03-19-2014 11:57 AM

You can't leave a crooked bumper sticker alone... but you HAVE a bumper sticker? That's what I'm hung up on. :)

If you ever watch the '80's TV show 'Home Improvement" Tim Taylor the tool guy just cannot leave well enough alone. Which is one the basic premisses / running gag. Very funny but also spot on for many men........
