Air compressor recommendations
Hubby wants to replace the aging upright compressor in the garage with a 60 gallon 220v one. Anybody have one they love (or hate)?
Thanks, Leah Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That "aging upright" compressor may be better quality than 99% of compressors being sold to the average consumer these days.
Is it actually malfunctioning?

So long as the bottom of the tank isn't rusting and the compressor he has is large enough -
Rebuild (or pay someone to rebuild) the compressor head. Renew the control parts. Install an automatic drain. In the future - be sure it's draining. Change the oil regularly. Then you have plenty of money left over for other toys. If your current unit is to small or has a rusty tank - I'm interested in the answers as well. My current compressor is to small. Every "classic" compressor I've tried to buy has had a rotten tank. I do have 3 great compressor heads (2 rebuilt), but no tanks to use them with. |

Compressor isn't large enough, 1.5hp. Impact driver after 2 lug nuts causes it to cycle for 20 minutes minimum.
Thanks for the recommendation Pete. That is one of the ones he's looking at. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Just stick with the oil cooled pumps - more popular brands and you'll be fine.
I've got the IR equivalent of the CH brand in the link.

I bought the 60 gallon compressor at Home Depot back in 2004 or 2005. I think I paid 450 for it using a 10% of coupon. It's been a great compressor - I love it!

Ingersol Rand they are excellent quality and will run forever in a DIY garage. I have a 60 gallon twin cylinder she is a workhorse. Parts are available and to my knowledge built in the U.S. I stole mine off Craigslist from a company going out of business.

has anyone ever been around a compressor tank that failed and had the failure attributed to age? Details?

To bad your not closer. I'm getting ready to move and have a 220V industrial compressor that I'm not moving across country. It was originally 3phase and I changed the motor to 220V. But its heavy and way more than I need these days. I use to paint a car now and then, now I just air up tires.

I have a Husky/Home Depot 60gal. I wish I had an 80-90gal. Using my bead blaster I think it has to run more than it should to keep up.

In a past job I worked for a compressor company as QC manager.
I saw several pressure vessels that failed/ruptured. If the tank has pin hole leaks, do not repair it. It will be thin in multiple areas, and if you weld/patch the tank, it will fail dramatically near the welded areas. Most tanks are never coated inside, the black scale of the steel does protect for a while but the water will eventually rust out the tank. Drain your tanks every time you use them and they will last for years. |
