Blu ray player question

Hi folks, I finally bought my first blu ray player.

I plugged it via HDMI to the only TV in the house. This TV was purchased in 2007 so it only has 1080i. I know that it works because my cable box is connected via this HDMI input, but of course only 720p, as I don't think Comcast sends 1080i content. (I could be wrong as I am behind the times obviously from this post.)

Player starts up, briefly shows the startup screen with the blu ray logo, the it goes dark. TV says invalid format.

Can I assume it's the player, and it's only sending 1080p which my TV cannot understand?

Sony BD-s5100
LG 32LCD

I already printed the return label for the player. Just curious to know if my assumption is correct. Sadly I don't have another TV to test with.

Thought I'd check the brain trust here as I didn't want to sign up to one of the HT/AV forums.

Thanks a lot!

Do you have a laptop with a hdmi input? You can test it on that. You may even be able to alter the format.

From the manual - page 33:

Reset the [Output Video Resolution] to
the lowest resolution by pressing (the square on your remote) on
the player for more than 10 seconds.

Turn both the TV and the blue ray off and disconnect the power.

Wait 30 seconds.

Unplug the HDMI

Power up the TV and the blue ray.

Power down and disconnect the power again.

Wait 30 seconds.

Plug in the HDMI cable.

Turn on the blue ray.

Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input for the blue ray.

Guys, it's clear that answer is 'buy a new TV'. He just needs some expert Pelican advise he can use to prove it to his wife.

Note: Blu ray needs a 60" minimum screen size.

Was this what you needed?

Thanks! I totally missed this. Of course I was just 'skimming' through the manual. :)

I actually told my wife I think our TV doesn't support blu ray. I'm thinking of buying one.

I actually have a perfect excuse today. It is my birthday!
