How reliable/accurate is this thing? the Q1'13 issue gives the value of a 1981 911 SC Targa as:

1 ~ $10k
2 ~ $19k
3 ~ $27k
4 ~ $43k

Seems a bit . . . excessive, to me. My mechanic says he estimates my car's condition at a solid 2.5 (and noted that he's never seen what he would consider a "4" in his life).

Some dufus drove by and offered me $9k for it late last year. In retrospect I know why, now...

I keep hearing how they are climbing in value. I hope my Carrera goes way up. :)

Go to a PCA Porsche Parade concours. You will see cars that are more perfect than when new.

Ten years ago decent SCs were in the $15K range.

Early cars are 'booming' now, but the target audience is narrow and just like original Jourdaches, fashion and interest will change over time.
Personally I'm a little skeptical about any trend.

It would seem odd for an insurance company to overvalue something which they cover though....

The increase in premiums for a higher valuation still far outweighs the off chance they would have to pay a 100% claim.


Hagerty sent me an email suggesting my valuations were too low for my #3 SC and my #2 1972T. I'm not sure if I'll adjust.

My experience is they are very close to being correct. BUT, you need to read closely what the industry defines as a number 1 through 4 condition vehicle. It is not the same standard that applies to your every day milk toast DD.

I have a (private) customer who recently bought a 1972 corvette that has beaten within an inch of its life then someone(s) started an amateur restoration. He called me to do some work and part of that was to evaluate the car. Well.........................................this car doesn't even qualify as a #4. Which according to their guide a #4 sells for @$12K. THIS car is worth maybe @$7-9K.................He paid $17.5
