Going to Harley dealer for maintance records/Receipt?
I pulled the trigger on 05 Buell XB12S. It was gravitating versus all the supermoto's I looked at. Anyways, The more I look at it, and rode. The more I liked it. It sounds goofy. I know I know, it's a Harley engine. They are supposed to sound like they are clanking, farting, and hiccuping. It is a unique bike coming from sport bikes.
Here's the question. The guy I bought it from said that he recently got it back from one of the local dealers for a complete clutch overhaul with new a new basket, and the whole 9 yards. (Within the last 2 months and 800 miles) However, he lost the receipt. I would like to confirm that it actually had the work done. Is it as simple as going down to the dealership and asking to confirm it had the work done, Or with privacy laws, are the going to tell me to pound sand?! I know if I'm really curious I can just pull the cover and inspect it myself.

Take the clutch cover off and check the plates. Cant take more than 15 minutes to pull it.

It's 15 min to pull the cover, but if it's anything like my old GSXR. Their will be a big torqued nut holding all the plates in. It's a involved process.

Call the dealer and ask someone in the service department. You never know what they'll tell you, regardless of the rules.

Im thinking that you should be able to visually inspect the clutch linings with the cover off. I dont think you need to disassemble it.

^^ the clutch plates go in the basket. It's a complete disassemble to inspect them. Prolly a few hours.
It's 'Merican, it can't be that hard! ![]() It could be worse. On my old 951, had to replace the clutch. 22 hour shop time. More like 25 hours after it was said and done.... lol

+1 but I'd probably go by in person (on the bike) and make sure they're not "swamped" w/ customers/biz at the time. Less likely to get a brush off than over the phone imo. Can't imagine them not accomodating a new owner...

They should accommodate your request for service history. That being said--I'd then never darken their doorway again--or for that matter any other "stealership". If I've learned one thing over the years it's that these guys could care less about your overall experience and will brush you and your business aside just to fall all over the next RUB that runs into the place to buy his first bike.
If you're not planning to do the wrenching yourself then find a good indy shop. Ten to one the mechanic there is a certified and well-trained escapee from a soul-less dealer. Cool scooter by the way! Those Buells are a blast to torque around on.

I'll prolly stop by on tuesday. A interesting tid-bit. I went ahead and pulled the inspection cover to see if i can see anything. (I can't) but the primary chain has no play in it what so ever.
I'm worried, does warranty work transfer to new owners?

I would have passed the ball back to the seller B4 sealing the deal. He can go get the receipt, show you his credit card statement, canceled check or whatever......

Go there on the bike. The service dept. guys will probably recognize it. All you really need is the VIN, as said above.
I had a bud who worked at a dealership. He was tired of it because all he did was install chrome parts. RUB buys new bike and $$$ of chrome parts. Dealership installs the parts for RUB. He said he hadn't done any real work in years. He would send people to me that didn't have $$ to pay the shop rate. I was thankful as hell. I was awful broke at the time, and the extra occasional easy swap out jobs kept me in cigs, and the gas bill paid. I was just under 1/3d the shop rate. Did some clutches too. While easy to uncover, you can't really inspect a HD clutch without some additional disassembly. 2-3 hrs, tops, kinda depends on the bike. Stripped bar hoppers less, baggers more. Carter |
