Computer question, LOUD BUZZING when starting a DVD or video
 

Occasionally I get a loud buzzing which will occur when starting up a video or DVD. Nothing beyond a hard boot will kill the noise. The computer will reboot without any issues and all functions are restored.

When the buzz, hits.....Screen is frozen and no other function works except for the on/off button.....any ideas? It happens with YOU tube and Red Box DVDs.....

Sounds like an audio driver locking up.

Does it do it concistently with the same DVD or is it random.

Mine has done that a few times (never play DVD's though). No idea why........

Without knowing which OS you you are running (Vista, XP, 7, 8 or even Mac) these are just a few guesses.

Could be you installed a new drive and Windows is interfering with the drive.
Could be the drive is defective and the DVDs are spinning out of balance.
Could even be a DRM issue:

Windows 7, no new drives or software......porn or regular movies.....one time only and not repeatable.....and not just DVDs, it happen with You tube clips.

Sorry to be asking for so much information but it does help to get a better understanding of the problem.

Are you using IE or something else: firefox, chrome or opera? Any add-ons?

Desktop PC or laptop?

Wireless internet connection or LAN cable?

If it is a Desktop PC could be the something like a loose internal component (like a fan on the heatsink) or a video card that has worked its way loose. Computer spins up and crashes.

If you are streaming on a wireless card it could be a driver issue:

Wireless WIFI, at first I thought it was an overheat. Let it cool and restarted.....however I restarted last night right after and everything was fine. Haven't found anything consistent as yet.

I have played the same video and each one worked fine past the point of the prior buzz bomb.

Could be a memory issue. How much RAM does your computer have? Are you able to pull a chip out ant try it? When you restart all the crap not released from memory is wiped so you get a clean slate. does it ever do it after a fresh boot/reboot?

If you have had this PC for a while and this issue has just started, I can think of only three causes: some driver issue (like a recent updated driver being corrupt), anti-virus issues or a failing system component.

The puzzling thing is random crashing under intense load. Bad or corrupt drivers can do that but failing system components can do that also. Further, you are stating that you can play the video past the point of the crash once the system reboots. If I had to pick one out the three I would go with some failing system component just because it is so random and happens under load.

How old is this PC?

3-4 years old, Dell Inspiron 1720

At that age, I would replace all of the Dell fans with high quality Corsair AF fans, they are quiet and reliable. The current fans are probably creating noise from bearing that are failing. I've seen this many, many times, especially in homes where animals are present. The noise can be intermittent, but then gets progressively worse over time. MicroCenter carries the fans you need.
