another 2002 question

so a '72 2002 appeared next to my work and is for sale. Original CA car (with original blue plates), minimal rust (some surface, a hole in the spare tire well), cracked dash, tired seats and paint (out in the CA sun most of its life). Clutch slips, and has minor oil leaks, no records. Otherwise seems straight and is all original. Asking is $5K. Turns out the owner works for USC next door to me. He bought it as a project but ended up moving in with his g/f and now doesn't have a decent garage to work on it. I don't care about the cosmetics - seat cover and I'm good to go - if a few $K in repairs would turn it into a fairly reliable fun car as opposed to a money pit. Have a local shop that could do a PPI. Fun or stupid idea?

If it's mostly straight, I think you are ok around there. The market is going nuts on them right now...

yeah, but I think I already talked myself out of it. It realistically needs at least $3K into it right off the bat. Plus I've learned to double any planned figure so the $5K car turns into $10K out of savings. If I hadn't just written a huge check to the IRS...

Round taillight cars are going up fast. That sounds like a good deal.

Too much money IMO. For one thing, you could buy a much nicer one for less than $10K.

Thanks Todd but I'm out. I bought a pristine 560sl convertible after I got tired of looking at way overpriced junk.

The market is indeed nuts right now: P4L looked at a reasonable one in Phoenix for me. 12k. It was gone in less than a day.

Again, thanks for the tip.

the sad thing is I just sold one, and a keyboard, so I've got cash. I may do a PPI just for grins.

I haven't seen any roundies for under $10K unless they were rough like this one. But admittedly I haven't looked that hard...

Personally, I like the black grille and square taillights of the 1974-76 models. I believe the '74-75s are exempt from smog regulations. I bought a nice '74 that ran really well for $3,200. It had the automatic transmission (a better starting point for a 5-speed conversion) and a halfway decent 20' paint job. I sold the car a couple of months ago and would love to have another, but I'd want to get a really nice one if I did it again. $20-25K will get you a really nice one, and a tii is the way to go.

As they say, you're better off buying one for $10K that somebody else put $20K into.

Here in Chicago it's worth more than 5K. I'd be all over it, if I didn't have one sitting in the driveway(not a roundie). Hell, if I could get away with it, I'd still buy it(my wife would kill me).
