Those cars are going to be worth twice as much in the very near future. Just like early 911's and 356's.........you cannot go wrong.

Those cars are 401K's!!!!!!!!

I wonder if that is the factory color?

A PPI would be helpful but I bought my 356 without one nor did I even talk to the seller - I just pushed the button!

Something to think about........snooze and you lose.... ;)

Take a look at current and completed listings on eBay.

If the car is straight with no rust issues, it it worth more than the asking price.

My problem, after driving probably 20 of the things, is that, while cool, they have certain performance drawbacks.

I owned one for three years in the mid to late 70's and loved the thing, but that was a different era.

What I plan on doing is making a modern 2002 (5 speed, upgraded engine, a/c, etc.) out of, if necessary, a few 2002s that need saving. The most enjoyable test drive I had during the last year of searching was an extended drive with a guy in Virginia who had done just that very thing...I would have bought it but the paint job was a hideous amalgamation of garish, metal flaked paint of multiple hues and random racing stripes applied to camouflage good taste.

Two months ago I would have bought the car Todd is posting with a visual inspection for rust, no mechanical PPI..the price is that reasonable.

^I have that problem too. Love the look of these cars, but I found them a rather unexciting drive. I briefly owned a '74. It was cheap. The car had issues, including rust, but it ran and drove pretty well. After I got over the Inca Orange paint, I decided it wasn't worth bringing it up to par (for me). But with a 5 speed and an M engine conversion...yeah, I suspect that would do it for me.

You should buy it. Cheap. Straight. Great base for a killer resto-mod project. Probably a reasonable if roughish driver in the meantime, with a little work ($2K).

I dunno....some people think a 914 has to have a six in it....but I wonder if they have ever driven a fuel injected 2.0?

Some may not think of the 140 series Volvos as fun exciting cars to drive....(but they ARE!)

I've ridden in a well set up 2002 - proper suspension but stock engine and while I wasn't driving.....it left an impression on me as a VERY fun little car. We were maneuvering in traffic...accelerating...then braking.....it felt like an autocross.

Heck my old Datsun 510 was a hoot to drive.

Guess my bar might be set a little lower than others....

Good find. Maybe I'm too picky looking at early versions.

scottmandue 04-05-2014 07:13 AM

Bummer, if I had not picked up the Miata a year ago I would be all over this.

Steve Carlton 04-05-2014 07:30 AM

A guy I know who owns an independent BMW shop says a small six is the way to go.

nota 04-05-2014 07:43 AM

those blocks made 1500hp in F-1 turbo's at 1500cc
a 400-500 turbo motor is not super hard to do

I had several 1800/ti 1602 and a 70-2002
really sweet cars but look out for rust

.

Truth be told, this is the car I'd really like to have. First "performance" car I fell in love with was an orange 914/2.0.

Sounds like an excuse to meet Jack Olsen.

I went from a bunch of BMW's to volvo's 140 then 240 turbo's
the volvo's just donot break very often and are far cheaper to fix when they do

never had or will have a fix it again tony
as those are as far from a volvo reliability as you can get
and rust while you watch too
