buy it, drive it, then flip it when you're bored.
You probably wouldn't lose on it. rjp |
Alfa GTV...
|
You won't find a GTV for 5k. At least not one that looks like it was driven over from Italy.
|
but as we know from the other thread, a 2002 will blow up and the GTV won't

Selling motorcycle because... |
How did I miss this thread... Just be aware of the slippery slope...
I did exactly what you did, I bought a roundie with a cracked dash and a bit of rust (in my case a fender, around the trunk trim, and some around the pedal box if I recall). Bear in mind the trim holes all around the car are a superb conduit for water and developing rust. I overpaid a little but in FL rounds are RARE. FFWD 7 years and I'm totally upside down for a non-tii 2002: We started with a new trunk lid and fender repair (more rust inside of course). Then came Rota Wheels (minilite look alike), and some suspension changes to match. Then the carb secondary was such a pain to get to work that we fuel injected it with bits of a 318 and a DTA computer. That turned it from a dog to a scorcher (same as Tii but more reliable). And since we had a donor 318 included in the purchase, added rear brakes from that car, a 5 speed tranny (must have on freeway), redid the exhaust, a tropical radiator and thermostat, bypassed the heater box (was stuck on and useless in FL), some door panel work, carpet, and recently $2000 or so of front end bushings, tie rods, bearings, an M3 Diff with LSD, Recaros, you name it - but it retains a stock look... I now have $20000 in that car and honestly it could use paint. Ouch. But my, is it fun !!! terrible picture, still got ride height issues (although Uhaul boxes seem to be Inka orange too) http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/IMG_0352.jpg By early 911 standards, that's nothing. By 2002FAQ forum standards where people supposedly "find" superb roundies for $500 all day, it's crazy. Don't care, I love that car. I would put it smack between a 912 and 911, driving wise. The biggest difference with a Porsche though is people's reaction to it. Could be because it's orange, but people practically kill themselves to catch up with me in traffic and give it a thumbs up or comment how they used to have one... It's a feel good car for sure. It's also super practical with tons of headroom, lots of backseat for my kids (who love it for school pickup), a trunk big enough to fit the body of your mother in law (if still alive the gas fumes will soon take care of that), it's dead reliable and with that LSD it's a hoot to drive on greasy roads. I highly recommend getting a 2002 before the secret is out more than it already is. I love that little thing and IMO it's not gonna stay cheap long. On the Alfa GTV, yes, I'd love one of them too ;-) I love how my exact car is featured on that cool 2 series ad from the Super Bowl ! (actually it's Bobby Rahal's car) very cool video here: http://youtu.be/nXSPQCl732M |

Todd, don't you think it would be so much cooler to pull up to a gig in a P1800?

Selling my motorcycle because "do whatever the f*** you want" doesn't mean what I thought it did. My paraphrase... :D |

The P1800 is pretty but nobody ever accused it of being fun to drive :-( |

I also would bet that $5K 2002 will turn into a $20K project... not that there is anything wrong with that. ;) |
another 2002 question
I feel guilty saying this as the owner of a recently restored 72 911T but I think my 2002 is more *fun* at city speeds, ergo most of the time unless you live near a canyon road. The 911 is a faster car of course but that 2002 with mild engine work feels like a mini M3, or a go-kart, so tossable, eager to wag it's tail without much skill required to keep it on the road. Get one, but buy the best body you can afford. And preferably a roundie for future value. Mechanicals are dirt cheap by Porsche standards, body work isn't :-)

Some bondo and a fresh coat of orange paint and I'd be good to go.

As a tii, I'm surprised it's so low. |

I would have scooped up the car Todd posted but it looks too original for what I have in mind for a 2002. I really don't want, as I wrote Todd, to sully a clean(er) car with my modifications. Hope someone gets it! |
Loved my 2002 eventhough it was a dog with a slush box. I just can't see paying that kind of coin on something like that unless you really had a love affair with the 2002 or something... Would probably be better to start with a ground up restoration considering the condition and work needed.
I would think it over... There are a lot of great cars to be had in that price range... heck the 8k you're talking about to start with would get you a very decent XK8 convertible, Vette, etc... If you're talking reliability and performance, 8k can still get you a fairly clean 944 with low mileage. Performance and grocery room... |
Years ago, my brothers and I had a little fleet of them. What a hoot! Good memories of the BMWCCA days and the 2002. Then when the 320i came along, everyone was goo-goo eyed over them but what a POS! That was the Cheby Vega version for BMW.

Seats are easy to find but everyone of them has the horsehair and foam deteriorated. Not all of the advertised reproduction vinyl coverings are correct so that might be the worst of redoing seats. Even with the mileage, mechanicals are no biggie. |

I have decided that a project is that last thing I need right now (other than myself), so if anyone wants the contact info for the seller, let me know. Very nice guy, and there is a good local shop that can do a PPI.
