need dog advice- doxie in pain

Any help appreciated to help my Dexter. We have three doxies and Dexter is the youngest at 7 years old and has been the most active. He's a full sized daschund and quite powerful for his size. Out of the blue last Wed. he seemed to be in pain. It seems like he's tender in the rib/hind quarter area. We have been giving him vet approved pain med's from a previous episode with one of our other dogs. We think he may have leaped off of something and hurt himself but neither my wife or I saw anything happen. If he doesn't get better in the next day or two it's off to the vet. I can pick him up under the chest and he doesn't wimper but touch him anywhere past the chest and he's not happy. I checked him over there are no cuts/punctures and no lumps of any kind that I can see or feel. I love my little buddy and don't want him in pain. He is eating OK and able to go to the bathroom OK but he's wobbly on his feet.

Why not take him to the vet today?

Dachshund = 90% chance that it's an IV disc in his back.

Daschund's owner for 20 years..

Get him in now and get on top of it.

More than likely it is his back (disk), they can put him on Carprofen and pain meds and see if that takes the inflamation down. The longer you wait the less of a chance he will have before the injury is to great.

No more jumping off beds, couches, try to avoid stair cases. They are just not built for it.

Surgery is very expensive so don't wait.

We had surgery on our little boy at 5 years old (14 pounder) and he lived another 11 years after that. He needed to be on Carprofen the last 2 years to keep him nice and active but he had no issues.

Another Dachshund owner. what they said, disk trouble, you may be able to get away with lots of rest and anti-inflammatories and pain meds, but if you aren't careful, you'll end up needing surgery. I think ours was about $4k.

Well good news my wife just called from the vets office. They took x-rays and nothing wrong with his back/neck/hips or legs in regards to any fractures or dislocations. They believe he bruised his back by falling or running into one of the other dogs or something like that. So I'm happy about that, I assume we'll be giving him some meds for a while. Thanks to all that chimed in.

Fingers crossed, but plain radiographs are not going to show a protruding IV disc; have to have a myelogram for that.

Watch his hind feet for any knuckling or dragging.

I am counting on the expertise of the DVM to be correct. This was the first time we've been to this vet but from what my wife got out of the folks that work there the DVM is 70 years old, very experienced and supposedly doing surgery that many can't or won't do. So I am hoping for the best. They gave Dexter a shot and two different prescriptions we'll see how he's doing in a few days but I think it's going to be a week or two before he's back to somewhat normal.

regency nice looking pups you have there our female Sophie looks just like your black and tan. Well Dexter seemed a little better this morning still slow going but his happy tail was swinging side by side. He ate breakfast but to be safe we seperated him from the other dogs just so they won't knock him around. We're going to take it easy with him for the next few weeks and see how he does.
