Spoon Question: Sig P220 "Old" Vs. "New"

I am considering the addition of a Sig P220 .45ACP. From what I can see, most of the "newer" guns have a tactical/accessory rail, which really doesn't interest me, as I prefer the cleaner looks without all the sharp edges.

I don't know the production dates, but it looks like older versions were made in West Germany and have the look I like. As I understand it, these guns utilized a stamped/folded slide, where as the newer, US made ones, have a milled stainless slide.

Since I'm likely to buy something on the used market, what says the PPOT Brain Trust? Anything to be concerned about? Is the P220 I'm looking for (no rail) available in a newish version? Any thoughts or experiences on one being better than the other?

I purchased my father a P220R (rail) about 10 years ago as a gift. It is one of the best weapons I have ever touched. I know that doesn't help your dilemma, but thumbs up to your purchase. They are excellent weapons. I have a 226R (.40, rail) myself.

Many thanks for the response HardDrive, I briefly owned a Sig P226 and very much loved the feel of that weapon. However, I foolishly let a "friend" talk me into selling it, as I generally shoot my vintage Browning Hi-Power, which belonged to my great grandfather.

I have a birthday coming up (45) and the P220 will be a present to myself. I am likely to inherit my Dad's 1911 so I've got that one covered.

Sig P220

I have had one of these pistols for over 25 years. The one that I bought was a police force "turn in" that had been carried much and shot little. It is a great pistol, has never jammed or misfed and is comfortable to shoot even with hot loads. It is probably the last one that I would part with. Great choice!

One of the greatest things about SIGs:

They're not plastic!

Can't go wrong with a P220 in 9 or .45 .

I'm a CZ guy.

Thanks guys. I don't mind some wear and tear and handling marks...sorta like my 993. So long is it was well maintained. As with any hobby, there is a tendency to over think things and I've heard elsewhere on the interwebs that the "earlier" P220 (with the rounded hammer tip) does just fine.

I was thinking "old" P220 meaning bottom (european) magazine release. Also sold as Browning BDA.
Carry on.
