Tried a new eatery tonight
As Lubey will confirm we have few options in our area that are not Tex Mex or chains.
Nothing else lasts long and our options are seriously limited. Tried a new French Bistro Cafe thingy. Girl taking our order was foreign, Eastern European is my best guess. She gets it wrong so I go back to talk to her about it. She calls the manager over who upon hearing the mix up rudely says to the girl "we've gone over this a couple of times already" and shoo's the girl off. I'm not a fan on supervisors who admonish their staff publicly but I don't own the place so whatever. Manager fixes everything and they owe us $2.00 and change. Asks if I want it back on the card or cash. Said put it on the card but you got it wrong as well. I spend 5 minutes explaining it again and she redoes it, now I owe her $0.42 on a $50 order. We stare at each other for a few awkward seconds and it occurs to me, she wants her 42 cents. I chuckled inside and handed over a dollar bill. If margins are that thin they ain't gonna make it.

Scott, a hole in the wall, a greasy spoon, or otherwise won't make it due to the environment. It's a high rent district, affluent citizens. The locals don't want the riff raft it takes to produce the quality, as well as the fact that the good workers aren't going to travel very far.
What you are left with is sub par quality in the kitchen, and a nice set of teeth and tits at the table.

I would move to Louisiana if I were you. Not too far. They know how to cook - and to host.
I lack a good pub in walking distance, but the restaurants make up for it. (My neighborhood is the Untied Nations). G |

When I told Stacy we were moving to TX her eyes lit up thinking it would be Austin.
We love it there. The kids will most likely attend UT so the plan is to grab an apartment or condo in the city then when Conner graduates retire to Boca although NOLA is in contention. But that's a few years off and anything could happen.

StoMo has it right, when I want good food I head on down to Houston. This place is way to homogenized and sanitized...but actually I really think it has to do with being a very young place. StoMo is a NYC boy and I'm from the coast line of CT - there are places there older then our largest trees around here...
Scott, I think this place needs something other then the processed, formulated menus. I went to small place in Houston this week - Vietnamese. By all accounts it lacked any sort of décor or even charm but the food was out of this world. I had a soup that had great heat and when I ordered it the lady (owner) looked at me and said 'You sure? it made with beef and pork meat that not leg ...very hot." I smiled at her and said I would be fine. The meat was heart and liver and pork skin and it was the best soup I have ever had! if they had a place like that here they would not be able to list the 'meat' on the menu - white bread don't do good with offal...

New eateries think they can learn on the fly. The best of the best have their crap squared away before they open the doors. That's my view.
I hate going to a new place and feeling like a guinea pig. That's not what I pay for and I won't go back a second time. |

Lubey,
You aren't kidding about Houston food being out of this world. It's fantastic. If I am not mistaken Houston is ranked either #1 or 2 as the most culturally diverse city in the states and it shows with the restaurant options. Let us know next time you are in town and we will go out for some grub.

We're starting to get better restaurants in San Anton. Ate at a place called Bliss in South Town last weekend and it was excellent.
