Creating Animated GIF's

I've done some Googling, but no definitive answer.

What is the easiest way to make an Animated GIF?

Any suggested Free downloadable software?

Frames counts and data size restriction tips?

If I have say a 5-10 second MOV file, how to animate it as a GIF?

thanks!

My suggestion is to use Ulead Gif Animator.

Google for more info's and tutorials. :)

I have used Microsoft Gif Animator. You can find it free online - probably.

The easiest way with a movie is to do screenshots & edit them to do what you want. I used to use the gif below as an avatar until it started to annoy me. I took a cropped photo of my car & then just moved it across the pictures in 10-12 steps.

Last time I googled something for somebody, I got a snarky remark. :)

Photoshop has a "save as" for making GIFs. Pretty easy.

thanks for the Ulead tip, but no I don't want to spend $50 on software to make maybe 1-2 gifs a year.....

Hosting them is an issue too, as even Pelican limits you to 100K, so where do you host them? if they're 1-2 meg?

yes I'm a noob. My Llamas say thank you.

Pretty much the opposite of what he asked for.

I still use an ancient copy of Paint Shop Pro Animation Shop I bought in the late 90s.

I must have missed the part about wanting ancient software to do the job.

Gimp is free and I am pretty sure you can make a gif with it. Look on CNET download dot com for Gimp for whatever os you are using. Search for tuitorials on google using the search terms "how to make a video gif with gimp."

There seems to be some confusion here. An ANIMATED gif is a SERIES of gif images (that you can make with a save as from many, many programs).

Rusty: You size limit with picture size, number of slides & compressing the crap out of the gif images you use. The moving Porsche above had to be avatar size so 50x50. The file is just 16.7kb with 16 gif images.

You could try downloading the trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements. The trial version is fully functional, but only lasts for 30 days.... which may be perfect for a one off.

Adobe Photoshop Elements will create animated GIFs from image files, if ever needed. Also available as a trial.
