well it seems the 919 is fast ...

Porsche Team News Release: Solid qualifying performance for the 919 Hybrid | FIA World Endurance Championship

porsche4life 04-19-2014 02:54 PM

Was there any doubt that it wouldn't be? Now will it be able to stay fast for 24hrs?

cockerpunk 04-19-2014 03:56 PM

there was a lot of talk from porsche management along the lines of "the winner of the 24 hrs will not have the fastest car ...." which is a nice sandbagging way of saying, we have a slow car, but think we can win on toughness and race strategy.

Tilikum Turbo 04-19-2014 04:28 PM

My guess is that with Porsche, Audi and Toyota having such closely competitive times...the Ace up the sleeve will be who spends the least amount of time in the pits.

If V-4 and dual hybrid system has even a 5% greater overall efficiency, then 1-2 pits stops over the course of the race could decide the outcome.

I'm curious as to why the 918 wasn't decided over the 919.

The 919 body is equipped with big_flat_sides (eg: stability in the faster corners) but the 918 looks sleeker for any flat endurance race over distance.

This makes no sense.

Help me understand, please.

The 918 is sleek and fast like the McClarenF1, but with a better drive train (if only from a mpg and pit-stop perspective).

If hybrid means less refueling, why is the 919 better than the 918 for endurance racing?

porsche4life 04-19-2014 08:09 PM

The 918 is a street car, the 919 is built to FIA rules for an LMP1 specs

sketchers356 04-19-2014 08:09 PM

The 918 is a sports car designed for the road, the 919 is a race car bespoke.

Ok. Thx.

Just curious as to why the 918 'streetcar' wasn't modified for the track.
Same as the CarreraGT.
Why a whole new design?

tttoon 04-19-2014 11:16 PM

Once needs to generate downforce and is designed to very specific rules, the other needs to be driveable and seat two.

Because to fit the rules, I'd bet there is very, very little similar between the cars. Do Audi or Toyota have a car that is anywhere near their LMP1 car?

Perhaps Porsche decided that the 918 didn't required the same type of promotion as their first "supercar" (Carrera GT) and are going a different direction with it.

This is a far reach, but could the 919 be adapted into a future street car?

Sometimes racing is just racing, now back to my cigar which is just a cigar.

I would not be surprised to see the Turbo V4 + hybrid 4WD setup make it into other Porsche models by 2018.

Anybody watch the race? Looks like Porsche got one in P3 behind the Toyotas. What happened to the other Porsche and the Audis?

Mike Billings 04-20-2014 08:49 AM

Watched the second half. Number 2 Audi crashed when braking on a wet rumble strip. Neither Audi finished.

The Toyotas had the best pace. 203 km/hr.

One Porsche 919 retired. Number 20 Porsche 919 finished 3rd behind the Toyotas and ahead of the Lola.

The 919 was in low-downforce config while the competition set for short-track.

And the sector times showed what was what vs them all. ;)

The biggest story from the weekend, Audi double DNF. I do not believe that has ever happened when only two are running..

cockerpunk 04-20-2014 04:06 PM

yeah radio lemans was saying the last time audi didnt finish a race with either car was in like 2009 or something.

toyota had the race pace thats for sure. the 919 was at best a half a second slow on pace for the race. they made a good effort.

perhaps toyota is the real challenge, not audi ....

Thank you, Paul....very cool!

Third place for the new Porsche - not too shabby all things considered.

Looking forward the rest of the season! ;)
