Recomend a in car camera?

Just was involved in a near miss accident that I believe was a attempt to deliberately cause the accident.

I was driving down a feeder street, 50 kph zone doing 40-45 kph. There is a row of parked cars on the street from the curling club. I see a flash of green movement from the right and a car pulls out in front of me (he's turned right) so I hammer on the brakes and the dog does a nose plant. He has a stop sign which he didn't appear to have stopped at. The guy driving the green pos almost comes to a complete stop and then makes a left turn down the first back lane where he stops and turns and looks at me like I've done something wrong.

He gets out of his pos and I get out of my truck. I proceed to tell him what I think of his driving ability in the most descriptive language I know. There would just be a row or two of x's if I posted those here. When I use the FY words he says "FY, those words I know" in a heavy Eastern European accent and I realise this clown doesn't speak or understand English. Except he says to me "you drive too fast, your fault" So I say to him next time you pull out in front of someone maybe they don't see you and you die. I got in my truck and drove away.

I realise afterwards that all he had to say is he was driving down the street and went to turn and I hit him, which maybe was his original intent and as the accident would have been at the rear I would have been at fault. That means my insurance goes up and he gets free money from them.

So what's a decent camera to put in the truck?

Ever heard of Gopro

GWN7 04-25-2014 06:56 PM

A Gopro would be nice, but the first time I forgot to remove it I would end up with no camera and a broken window. Was looking at ones on ebay that attach to the rear view mirror and give a 360 view but I'm not sure what else is out there.

You can swear in Canada?

Not like in Jersey, but yeah, they can.

I would think a cheapo dash cam is what you are after. Set and forget, they just sort of always run when the car is on, over writes oldest stuff when memory gets full. Ones I have seen looked like nothing much, on the visor or rear view mirror, pretty low key, cameras can be pretty small.

Curling Club? Ya gotta be kidding me!

Yes it's a place where people go for a excuse to drink in the winter time.

Do you have an IPhone? I think they have many apps to help you out on this. I have thought about a mount, possibly a suction cup mount on the windshield. When you get in your car, place it in the car and start the app to record. When you leave take your phone. I think it may become a simple habit, not a task to remember.

I got cutoff by a construction truck last year and chewed up my wheels from the sidewalk. With all the traffic I wasn't able to get the name on the truck or go after him.

I got a cheap PYLE but it seems to be doing the job. With the 32GB SDHC Card is holds a weeks worth of driving, then overwrites it.

If you go the gs1000 route (sort of generic term now), you should read this about which one to get: GS1000 | Dash Cam Talk

Dashcam

I'm currently using a unit I purchased at Amazon that I read up about on line.
Cost me approx. $115 including the 32 GB Samsung data card.
Look up A1080pgs801. It a unit purchased directly from China from company called E-Prance. What ever, it has a small screen and seems to work fine. Documents constantly and turns on automatically with power, easy to aim with the little screen. It functions as a true dash cam in small file segments that you choose the length of and lock the file automatically via "g's" or manually if you hit a button should something happen. You can have full GPS data also or not. I ordered not for less cost but they sent the full GPS, which you can turn off.
Others on the forum use a "mobius" unit and like it. That unit is slightly smaller but no screen. About the same or a little more cost actually.
Think I'm going to get a second unit for my other work car. Cabling is always the biggest challenge, I've revised mine some now, If I was to do again, I'd add a 12vdc to 5vdc mini-usb (also cheap on amazon) and figure out the power so its not in the cigarette plug. Thats a near future project. Think this will be fun for track days also vs. go-pro. The video is great to my eyes.

Anyone have a good source for a GoPro? Thanks

cstreit 04-26-2014 06:26 PM

You wouldn't want a go pro for this. You'll have to switch and clear cards all the time and remember to turn it on every drive. You'll forget on the one day you need it. Get a dedicated system that loops recording.

For car cams would you not want 2 cameras, one pointing forward, the other one back?

Ha, perfect timing.

Woot has the Gear Pro again today.

I've got one, they work just fine.

Comes with all the mounts you'd need. Add an SD card and good to go. Does the overwrite thing so set it and forget it.

Woot

Thanks for the link, just ordered one!

Here is the Gear Pro camera. Sorry about the wind noise. This was the first time trying it out. It was a bit overcast. I will try it again when we have a sunny day. Overall, not bad for $40.

Got mine on Friday, haven't had a chance to play with it yet. Plan on mounting it in the Unimog this week and give it a try!

SJ4000 camcorder

Got mine today. It's a replica of the GoPro and its called SJ4000 1080 HD camcorder 1/4 the price of the original one ($99.20). It has a 1.5" LCD at the back so you know what you are shooting. Got decent reviews at Amazon so I will test it this week
