Spent alot of time this weekend under a hood.
Actually 2 hoods. Yesterday morning, woke up and went to work right away changing an intercooler pump on the E55 Mercedes. The old one wasn't working at all and my inlet air temps were high which causes the engine to retard timing causing poor performance. Took about an hour and $97 from FPC-euro (with a lifetime warranty), so not bad. Spent the rest of the day cleaning the car up and my garage in preparation for working on a '95 325i that I'm giving to my son. Saturday evening, the wife and I went to a local cruise-in and took the E55. Some people were like 'why is that car here?'; a few others knew what it was. I made a couple of new acquaintances, so time well spent. On to today: slept in a little then got busy on the 325. Since it is immobile (cylinder head is cracked) I had to drag it into my garage which required a 90 degree turn. Man, those cars are heavy! My goal for today was to get the engine and transmission out in one piece - didn't happen. Got as far as I could, almost there. It took me over an hour just to get the guibo disassembled. I bought a used long block for $300 on someone's word that it runs so fingers crossed XXX!!! And that was my weekend...

I'm told it is a 130k mile engine that was running when removed from a car 4 or 5 years ago. It was going to be the donor for engine swap into an E30, but the guy never got around to it and sold the car. Turns out he is a Porsche Technician at one of the local Porsche independents. The engine wasn't in a car when I got it so that's where the 'fingers crossed' part comes in. Everything so far looks fine, rotates nicely. I routinely see these engines in the $400-$500 price range in my area but he was willing to go down to $300 on it.

Pulled the valve cover off my $300 engine this evening. Looks pretty clean. It might actually have 130k...
