If I get an engine block heater and plug it in while I'm in the north boulder rec center can I park up front at the charging station? |
When gasoline is no longer available and a bunch more nuclear plants are built, I will likely drive electric..... This scenario will likely not happen anytime soon however.... Until then, I guess I will continue paying taxes to fund the subsidies that pay for others to play with expensive financially un-viable "green" toys.

My 996 is a more economical alternative to my F150, does that count?:D
|
I think they are all cool, and yep, even a 996 can be your economical alternative! It was just interesting to me that I saw a couple of the same screen names on the Volt site that I have seen here - yet, I don't think they 'admit' to owning one...
I will say that it is a bit like driving a spaceship... I can't imagine how many computers are running this car. I don't normally get extended warranties on cars - on this one I got the longest, highest mileage bumper to bumper warranty I could (I keep my daily drivers a long time). When you open the hood there is the 4-cylinder that I almost recognized, and then a mass of orange cords, black boxes and warning signs.... I don't even want to change the oil in this thing. And I will have to agree - it is not the most attractive vehicle I have owned. I think that is partially attributed to wind tunnel directed design. It isn't awful though - more of just what Detroit (and really Japan and Korea) has been serving up lately... |
I was going to go electric (Volt of Leaf) because we have a charging station here at work but others have got wise to the idea and now the charging station is almost always occupied.
Wife wants a Pirus and she gets to pick the next car, I'm thinking we will get the station wagon. I like the idea of a TDI but... did I mention the wife wants a Prius? The only catch would be if I could find a VW beetle TDI. Currently dive a Elantra and a Miata... I love both but the Miata is a bit of PITA as a DD... Miata gets 89 |
My daily work commute is 45 miles and our office complex has 6 free charging stations spread over the parking lots. They are almost always open. When I lost my Audi TT late last year I seriously considered getting a Volt - it would reduce my commuting expenses to wear items only. I might be alone on this but I think the Volt, especially in black, looks pretty cool. Where it misses the mark is the interior - cheap looking and feeling. Ultimately I didn't want to spring the $$ for a new car, even with the discounts, and ended up with my '03 996. I average 23 mpg with it and could not be happier.

My DD is an 06 Jetta TDI. Not the most exciting car, but fuel efficient and reliable. I hope the Elio makes it to production.
Elio Motors: Ultra High Mileage Vehicle If they hit the price point I'll be buying one  |
Of course sneakers count!!!!
I hadn't seen the Elio - sort of a CanAm with a cover, looks great for single person commuting. |

My brother and I built a diesel Ford Ranger. It has a 4 cylinder Kubota diesel engine. I installed a very small Garrett turbocharger. The direct injected engine doesn't have a wide powerband, so city driving isn't much fun (constantly shifting), but I consistently get 36-38 mpg, and the utility factor cannot be beat.
I will be selling my BMW M3 in exchange for a more practical ride. I've debated a TDI versus a Prius with larger battery pack. I believe the TDI would be more fun to drive, but the Prius may require less dinking. Fortunately, I don't need a car to be inspiring. I use motorcycles to cleanse the soul. Jurgen |
