How lame is THIS
 

On another board, one of the posters received a PM from Oscar-winner (Sound) Michael Minkler, pretty much demanding that she delete a post about him made in 2007. The problem, as he tells it, is that the post (titled "Micheal Minkler - go to hell!") has worked it's way to the first page of Google when you search for him, which he says is damaging to his reputation. The webmaster has indeed been contacted by an attorney.

I know the board has some industry types, so I wanted to ask: seriously? As in, can there be any real impact on this guy's career because some random poster ranted about his being rude to another sound guy when he won?

I doubt anything will happen. 7 year old thread and it's not the poster's fault it one of the first results on Google.

i guess there is no statute of limitation on the internets.

I don't think calling him an a-hole constitutes defamation.

The fact that he's pushing threats confirms that fact though.

Yes, when you don't want something brought forward a lawsuit is always the best course of action.

How many people were googling this loser anyhow? The fact that a seven year old post was at the top speaks volumes.

I wonder if PPOT will be on the first page now.

Some people just take the internet, especially forums, WAY too seriously.

At any rate he will need to show that he was harmed by the post in order to collect damages.

It happens. Even this board has given in to pressure to delete and/or lock threads that were deemed harmful to an outside business.

That's what set off the original post, and I get that there was some negative publicity about Minkler for his remarks, especially since O'Connell's mother died later that night. He likely feels awful and even now regrets the comments - but something like this isn't going to redeem the remarks, and will make him look even worse as it spreads.

On a scale of 1 to pretty GD lame, it pretty much pegs the meter.

Search for the guy's name. It is true - the post is one of the first results. Of course now if everyone searches and clicks on it, it will only get promoted higher up in the results ...

It is a classic case of the barbara Streisand effect. I laugh every time I think of that.

Right there is the biggest problem with the internet, when someone googles Mike Minkler, that is the post that should come up first. I went straight from being irritated to laughing, thanks.

Pretty much guaranteed he'll be top of the Google search for a much longer time now...

Mike Minkler and his racist, homophobic My Sweet Pony forum post will be forever be enshrined in the internet archives.
