Lack of market reaction to Ukraine.

I find it interesting that the market has not really reacted to the situation in Ukraine. Makes me think that the outcome of the situation is already pre-ordained.

You nailed it. They're not much more than a gnat in the US market. Their economy is smaller than Italy's.

Near bankrupt ex-Soviet state. Nearly non existent GDP. No demand for their produce or currency from the outside world. They're screwed.

Makes you wonder why Russia cares then??

We have a Ukrainian in our office who still has a lot of family over there. Tough situation for sure. He says most of the older generation long for the days of the USSR while the younger generation wants the opposite

I don't think it is so much a matter of why Russia cares as it is one of Putin trying to show off the size of his influence (testicles) to the rest of the world. The Russian Federation of today is a shadow of the USSR of the Cold War era,and he is desperately trying to bring those days of glory back.
