hole in the water to throw money in

Broke down and bought a boat.

Well... sorta. Got a 15.6' square stern canoe, plan is to use my electric motor to go upriver, and paddle down river. Should be fun with teh kids.

Anyway, I'm pondering... do I want to go thru the hassle of adding navigation lights, etc. so I can take it out on the river after dark? I'm thinking I do, but reading the regs I'm not sure if I can do it effectively and inexpensively...

Still need to get it registered and numbered, need a new deep cycle battery and charger, need a few safety things (already have paddles, throwable cushions, and life jackets), would like an extended handle for my throttle/tiller, a dolly for the front end so I can get it from car to water by myself, etc.

Being on the water at night is a ton of fun and scary beyond belief, usually switching between the 2 in an instant. Nav lights dont have to be too complicated, something like this could work for a small boat, ARCNAV Rowing - Canoe - Kayak Lights * Small Boat Navigation Safety Lights for Bow and Stern .

I've done many a moonlight canoe trip, but only in unpowered ... which means no regulations to deal with.

That kit looks like a winner - thanks!

We used to have a 19' Grumman aluminum flat back canoe that we'd take camping. Had a Johnson SeaHorse engine for it. It went pretty good on a calm lake. Dad would always take one of us kids and sit us up in the bow to keep it down. Once on plane it really scooted.

Here's an old photo of it on top of the old Pontiac wagon we used to haul our trailer around. The canoe made a good wind break.

Cheaper solution

You have a canoe that has gunnels. Just buy the battery operated clamp on lights from any marine store. Will be cheaper and easier that the velcro ones for a kayak.

We have something similar to this Attwood Portable LED Navigation Light Kit on our small boat at the lake.
