Pelican Parts catalog update fail

Just went to browse the Pelican catalog for parts that aren't for my particular car, to see about adapting them...

Get bombarded with the annoying "Please enter year make and model" crap...

One of the reasons I come to Pelican repeatedly is that they don't make you do that...now it makes searching for anything much more difficult if you aren't 100% sure where its from...

Can it be gotten rid of? That tool is annoying and makes finding stuff MORE difficult.

Agreed.

It's fine as an option but don't force it as a default or the only way.

I understand it does help to minimize incorrect purchases and reduce returns but sometimes we are looking for something that's not for our car. Had this frustration on another site recently trying to source exhaust pieces for a custom set up on one of my other cars.

There is (was?) an option to dismiss that prompt. At least there was last week when I bought some torsion bars.

Welcome to Pelican Parts, the Walmart of Porsche parts.

andyt11 05-07-2014 06:13 AM

Just don't use it. You can still type in the box at the top left and search the old way.

Seems a bit high and mighty coming from someone enjoying the free use of the forum.

Have you been banned lately? Well it leaves you kind of speechless. Just saying. G.

Hey CHICKS, if I invite you into my home and you say "Geez, what a dump!" that makes you a d***. Just thought you should know.

Let's not be too hasty to judge here. Maybe in CHICKS' world, WalMart is high end, top quality.

Take it as a compliment to the excellent work you do Wayne, Walmart is definitely a model of efficiency in retail sales.
Thank you for all that you offer to the Porsche enthusiast Wayne, you do not have to use Pelican Parts site and forum for long to see that it was put together by a true car guy for car guys. Thanks!

I don't know about calling pelican the walmart of Porsche parts in a negative way. I look around and normally end up here for most stuff. I was in the local p-car dealership last week and saw 2 pelican parts stickers on the side of their parts cabinets. When I asked the guy behind the counter about it, he said, "some stuff you just can't from Porsche anymore and pelican parts normally has it if Porsche doesn't". Seems to be pretty high praise if a dealership is ordering from you.

I'd give you the other 5% if I didn't have to order bug parts from CIP!

There's a guy named Dale Carnegie. He wrote some books. You might want to check them out.

I understand the desire to search in various areas / cross-models. That is why I specifically wrote the search engine so that you can search within your entire year model (search within 911, or 911 range 1974-89), or within all Porsche (just like before). The new catalog and the new search engine were developed following the suggestions of more than 10,000 surveys over the past four years. No functionality has been lost with the new site, but it has been optimized for the 99% of people who use it.

If you wish to see our specific 1974-89 Porsche catalog (just like before), you can see it here:
Pelican Parts - Porsche 911 (1974-1989) Parts and Accessories

and searches performed within that catalog search the entire 1974-89 range. If that is enough, you can then simply click "search all Porsche" on the left side which will give you all of the functionality of the "old" search engine.

There are too many improvements to the site and search engine to list one-by-one here. One important thing to note is that there was no loss of functionality on the site - I made sure of that. Yes, there may be a different path to get there if your one of the 1%, and yes, I know, people don't like change. But these changes addressed the complaints from 99% of the people we got surveys from (namely, #1 was that it's "too easy to accidentally order parts that don't fit my car"). I felt that this solution was the best of both worlds - maintaining car-model-group functionality (as we had setup in the old days of 1999), and also allowing our customers to be sure that they are only seeing what fits their car (if they wanted this option).

Feedback has been very good in general - we've been testing this system on BMW and Mercedes for over a year and a half now and refining it prior to rolling it out on Porsche.

-Wayne

Thanks for the explanation, Wayne.
Keep up the good work! Pelican is the major recipient of my paychecks.

Mr Dempsey,
The Waltons have pickup trucks. You have that groovy little BMW motorcycle car thing and a 962. I'm just sayin'

If I couldn't find something, I would just call. If I could not figure out the search thing, I would have my nephew look at it.

I just went and checked the online catalogue for the first time in several months and I think it's a great improvement. Since my 993 is so low maint., most of what I buy from Pelican now is for Mrs. Lee's E92, and Pelican's previous catalogue format did not list an E92 as a choice. So I always had to call my orders in. Now I can just choose 2008 328i, which I like more.

BTW, I recommended Pelican to a SoCal shop owner today who buys all his stuff from WorldPac. Wish I could buy more, but my 993 never needs anything other than filters once a year.

You need more Audi A8 parts, Wayne.

I had to replace my window regulator recently (actually did it 2 days ago). Tried to order from you, but ended up having to use a competitor since you didn't carry the part :( So, $200 went to "the other guy," but I DID buy the rivets from here ;)

I will commend you on prices, though. I also needed a coolant temperature switch for the Audi. Most other sites wanted $20 or so for the part; I got it here for I believer $6. Chump change for the part, but that's still a huge difference in price between you and your competition. I've been nothing but pleased with Pelican since I first came here. I say keep up the good work.
