1999 Mercedes 500SL

I picked up this 99 Mercedes 500SL as a project but its just a bit to much for me right now. It was a theft recovery. The owner bought it back so it still has a clean title. Take a look at the pictures. Let me know if your interested. Mods if this is in the wrong spot feel free to move it.

Thanks, Tom The Car is in Kansas City Mo

I'd like 3500.00 with out the Hard

The rear bumper cover can be saved, the front bumper cover is pretty cracked it might be ok but I doubt it. The seats have been recovered, The center console wood is messed up from them trying to get the radio out. I really have not gone through the inside yet. The windows all work. The car runs and drives. One of the tires is flat and will not hold air. The radiator is loose for some reason. It does not leak or get hot. The Owner had a little doggie so the tops of the door panels are clawed up. It really just needs some cosmetic love. The clear coat on the paint is peeling in some places. One of the doors has been keyed. It has 148K on it. One Owner. It has the AMG Sport kit on it.

I hate to say it but that is a parts car. How the title could be "clean" if he bought it back from insurance co., IDK(?)

Anyhow, the front bumper is $1300+ paint. Recovered seats and messed-up door panels + no hard top + 148k miles = schitbox. No one wants these cars unless they're super-clean. They are so plentiful and cheap in beautiful condition, combined with normal high maintenance costs really puts downward pressure on the market for less than cherry cars.

Its a little better than a parts car. I always try to describe them as bad as I can so there are no surprises. The bumper cover can be had used for around 4-500 bucks. The door panels can be bought used for under 200.00 I'm pretty good at finding used parts. I'd say for around 2000.00 you could have a nice driver.

I would not put it so harshly, but Dennis is right. Maybe we are spoiled in CA, but I can find one of these for $6k at the same mileage that is in good condition and ready to drive with two tops.

You are looking at bodywork there, and unless you can do that yourself, it will cost $2k just for a decent prep and paint to match the rest of the car.

I hope you can unload this - at least for what you paid. Good Luck,

G

I think put back together the car is worth 8 I bought it because it has the glass panoramic hardtop on it. Those sell for 3-4000 by it self. I don't think I'd have any problem getting 3000-3500 for the car without the hardtop on eBay.

the car talk guys said it best:

"expensive cars are always expensive to fix no matter what age"

DIY makes it a little more reasonable though.

eBay penny start no reserve. You'll (probably) get your $3-3.5k.

I'm gonna pull the bumper covers off. I looked at the bumper covers and the mounts are not broke they just popped off, so I'm going to fix that and put the interior back together then she'll be put on eBay.

The main issue I have, aside from them being heavy and not sporty at all, is the fact that you can't get them with a stickshift in the US. If I could row gears, I'd go for it, especially at the price point they go for currently.

Even this one witch is in just a little better than poor condition is still such a great looking car. 10g for a really nice one is a bargain. That's a lot of car for the money. This one will clean up pretty nice. It will be a good driver

It would not be an enjoyable car with a manual transmission. I love to shift a sports car as much as anyone but these are boulevard cruisers with a V-8 and plenty of weight and luxury. They are actually great driving cars in good shape but it's a different type of enjoyment from a sports car.

Of course the stick doesn't make it a sports car. But I have driven plenty heavy German luxury cars with a stick that were a lot more fun than their slushbox counterparts. Even my commuter econobox cars I prefer a stick.

It's a good thing (for us) that German cars are reputed to be so bad on maintenance- hence **** resale.

Where else can you get this for $10K? Sorry, but this is a deal. Lovin it.

I've been trying to buy this car for a couple months. They have been fighting with progressive because the company that towed the car did all the body damage to the car. The thief only took the wheels and tried to get the radio. Everything else the tow truck driver did

That tow truck driver should be beaten with a tire iron.
