My buddy won't buy a Porsche because he does not want to be " that guy"

He is 45 recently divorced, living in his parents basement for now. He just sold his house, and has a good job and selling his house, meant all his bills are now gone.
He comes to me for advice, wanting to buy a "nice sporty euro " car. He was looking at awd, Audi, or BMW. When he asked me what I would buy in his price range, my instant reply was C4s. I told him that I honestly thought it was a better car for the money, and more reliable than both the others. And if you want a sporty car that is fun to drive..........
His retort to this was "I just don't want to be that guy" Middle aged, single driving a Porsche to compensate. Is that what people really think about P car drivers?
He said that I can pull it off because everybody knows I have had them all my life.
I told him, that idgaf about what others think, and if you are buying a car for it's image , then you are already " that guy"

fejjj 05-14-2014 07:26 AM

It is none of my business what anyone else thinks of me. I love my Porsche!

RANDY P 05-14-2014 07:31 AM

+1

Also, ever look at the middle-aged yuppie euro sedan driver? A cliche-

livi 05-14-2014 07:33 AM

To some people worrying about image is everything. Sounds like he would be more comfortable in a discrete Audi or the equivalent. :)

GH85Carrera 05-14-2014 07:33 AM

A few years ago one of my wife's co-workers heard that I drive a Porsche and she asked my wife if I bought as a mid-life crisis thing. My wife replied it can't be he was 19 when he bought his first Porsche back in 1974, and he is well over 38 years old now. ;)

slakjaw 05-14-2014 07:40 AM

Tell him to get a 4 door

Tervuren 05-14-2014 07:45 AM

What about a 2014/2015 'Vette? :D

If he's image conscious - Mercedes/BMW are in the outs, an Audi is a stretch. Depending on what image he's trying to avoid, a Lotus or a Jaguar could be a possibility.

if there was a time to do what he wants..
not what everyone else thinks he should ...
now is it..
given his sporty euro quest...
she got the part needed for P ownership..
a sense of humor..

I daily drive an '84 cabrio. on main street. with dark sunglasses... I *am* that guy. Do I care? Guess...

Funny related anecdote: When we are in family, my wife drives. I overheard many times "he must have lost his license, his wife has to drive the Porsche"...

Funny anecdote number 2: I was listening to some Nightwish, top open, a bit loud. People were looking at *that guy*. Songs ends. Radio on random play... next song, a bunny and cake song from my son's favourite CD... The whole street burst out laughing. So did I.

The flip side there: I'm 28, longer hair, beard and wear designer clothes....and I drive an old 'vert Lotus Elan.......and every friggin body thinks I'm a drug dealer.....If I gave a crap about that kind of thing, I'm pretty sure I'd rather be 'that guy' than a drug dealer.

The Jaguar F-Type is rumored to be coming soon in AWD with a stick....The AWD XF isn't terribly common, at least around here, but it's out there. Something about Jags just doesn't set people off like some of the German Marques.

Steve Carlton 05-14-2014 08:11 AM

How about he gets the Porsche and a license plate frame that says "My other car is my mom's Buick"?

911SauCy 05-14-2014 08:14 AM

He's 45 living with his parents...he's already "that guy".

Perhaps getting back on his feet will help with self-definition etc.

Until then, well appointed 1996 Chevy Cavalier :)

cabmandone 05-14-2014 08:19 AM

Tell him to buy a Buick Le Sabre. No worries about being "that guy" in one of those :)

Steve Carlton 05-14-2014 08:23 AM

That car gets the "This is my other car" plate frame.

Reddog2 05-14-2014 08:24 AM

Sorry - needs a truck first, so he can move out of basement.

I think being 'that guy' is more about behaviour than anything else.

I do not worry about being 'that guy' but i do worry about being 'that girl' with my vehicle purchases.:D

Yeah, if he's concerned about perception he's probably got bigger problems.

1990C4S 05-14-2014 09:13 AM

Is it our job to drive up demand for used P-cars?

He has a certain perception, it's not a problem for me if people think that about me.

Steve Carlton 05-14-2014 09:14 AM

Nothing says 'Sporty Basement Guy' like a Pacer...

Here's the thing: that is what some people think of middle-aged Porsche owners. But "that guy" loves Porsches and likely has for a while, so he doesn't care what they think. Your friend is right - he's not "that guy."

Rats! Beat me to it!

Around 45 I bought my 944, I was "that guy" (but had my own house, a dumpy shack in the hood but it was mine)... did I care? Not a lot, had a heck of a lot of fun with that car.

I now drive a Miata... I really don't care what people think of what I drive!

scottmandue 05-14-2014 01:22 PM

No one has mentioned a Corvette?
I love Corvette's... I told my wife that when we were shopping for a "fun car" for me... she said "Corvette? You don't want to be that guy."
I kid you not!

Brando 05-14-2014 01:27 PM

Truck, then apartment/condo, then an older 911 :)

DanielDudley 05-14-2014 02:18 PM

He should get an MGA or a TR3 and date hot chicks who get him.

Bill Douglas 05-14-2014 02:22 PM

I think he is beyond help A camry might be the ideal car for him.

I was originally going to say Lexus... Yeah if he doesn't want to be 'that guy' then Camry it is. It doesn't get more generic and bland and boring than that.

afterburn 549 05-14-2014 02:44 PM

lives in moms basement?
ROFL
not to be mean.......he just joined the mullet club dudes with no life.
i mean for him to say "not that guy" -
