Time in the NV Desert

Spending some time at gold mines in Nevada this week. Stayed in a small town called Winnemucca. Actually not a bad place or at least not the worst I've stayed in. Had a really nice meal at place called the Martin Hotel where they serve family style Basque dining. Had the braised lamb shanks. Pretty good. A surprise to get such a meal there but knowing the mining history of the area I knew that there may be some 'diamonds in the rough'.

Had to take this shot. Winnemucca has a red light area and casinos. Thought maybe the local talent was trying to drum up business!

Had to drive for over an hour to get to the first site. Not much activity. Glad I packed some bottles of water and had a full tank. Met some locals :) but all they did was look at me or run away...

If you had a whole bunch of nothing, the Nevada desert is where you would keep it.

broke down in Winnemucca back in 2002 when I was driving my '69 back from California to Indiana. As I'm messing with the car, a guy comes up and asks what I'm "workin' on?" ....annoyed, I tell him that starter crapped out. He ended up legitimately helping me out...helped me get on my way. Kind of a cool town.

So, you're just kinda drifting around the high plains?

From wiki:

On September 19, 1900, Butch Cassidy's gang robbed the First National Bank of Winnemucca of $32,640.

Winnemucca's brothel district, while smaller now than in the 1980s, is known as "The Line" or "The Ring Circle", based on the layout of the street where the brothels are located. Sex workers in the town must register their vehicles with the local police.[5]

According to a billboard along State Route 140 (the "Winnemucca to the Sea Highway"), Winnemucca styles itself "The City of Paved Streets". (yee-haw!)

Winnemucca's climate is semi-arid, averaging a mere 8.28 in (210 mm) of precipitation annually. Summer days tend to be hot, but the temperature drops significantly at night. Winters are cold with generally light snow, with 20.9 in (53 cm) falling during a typical year. The highest recorded temperature in Winnemucca was 109 °F (43 °C), on July 11, 2002, and the lowest recorded temperature was −37 °F (−38 °C) on December 22, 1990.[10] Freezing temperatures have been observed in every month of the year.

Winnemucca is home to the Buckaroo Hall of Fame and Heritage Museum. It is also the headquarters of the Flawedcast Network.

if you're looking for an exciting drive, take 93 south from Wendover to Ely.

120 straight miles of NOTHING but pure http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400085168.jpg

Here's some more scenery on highway 93 (Lincoln highway). Makes me feel kinda nostalgic, when i was a kid I saw lots of these roads from the back of a buick station wagon:

Quote:

although US 50 has the nickname "The Loneliest Road in America", US 6 has a solid case for the title, as Tonopah and Ely are the only cities it goes through in the 306 miles (492 km) it traverses in Nevada. In addition, there is not much traffic for US 6, as it ends 38 miles (61 km) south of the California/Nevada border in the small town of Bishop, CA (with connections to the former western terminus of US 6 in Los Angeles).
Quote:

George R. Stewart, author of U.S. 40: Cross Section of the United States of America, initially considered US 6, but realized that "Route 6 runs uncertainly from nowhere to nowhere, scarcely to be followed from one end to the other, except by some devoted eccentric". In the famous "beat" novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac, protagonist Sal Paradise actually considers hitchhiking on US 6 to Nevada, but is told by a driver that "there's no traffic passes through 6" and that he'd be better off going via Pittsburgh (the Pennsylvania Turnpike).
