1967 BMW 1600...worth it?

Saw this in a driveway and asked. The trunk tag says its a 1602 but the owner said the previous owner put that on and its actually a 1600. I have no idea about the difference. Here are some pics. Asking price is $6000. Its a bit rough IMO and if I was to pop it would be $1500 max.

What do you think?

Yupe, 1500 max, you would spend 6K easy to restore, IMHO.

A 1600 was the first BMW my wife had, bought it while finishing up school from a Judge. Was in OK shape, while driving it out to WA with the family from SC, blew the transmission in MT. It was fun driving down lookout pass in Jan with only 4th gear without winter tires.

2 yrs later after I just finished building our house we currently live in, had a big winter and snow slide off the house one night and flattened the car. The car did nickel and dime us to death but it was fun to drive.

I bought one of these as my second ever car in about 1980
it had more rust than solid metal and about 168,000 miles (from memory)
I believe that the 1602 was an upgraded version of the standard 1600 (maybe a 2002 suspension again from memory)
it should have a higher rearend ratio to offset the lower power of the 1.6 liter engine,
it was a fun car!
this one looks to have a Weber carb upgrade from the single barrel Solex
I would buy it and run the wheels off of it!

A lot has been changed on that car. A '67 1600 would have had u joint half shafts, can't tell if it still has the long neck rear end, no sway bars, red rear turn signals, and a "1600" emblem where the 1602 one currently is. It has a different size and pin locations compared to the later 1600 and 1602 emblems that sat next to the taillight.

If the rear end has been changed to short neck, the entire rear suspension including subframe and trailing arms has to go with it.

It does have the correct remote booster brakes, gauge pod, no marker lights or reflectors, short console, silver grills, and flush front turn signals.

Is the engine still a 1.6 ? 4 speed ? tiny, 2 piston front calipers ? driveshaft with 3 rubber flex discs instead of u joints ?

1600 and 1602 are the same, they just changed the name to match the 2002 better.

Thats what i see at a glance.

If memory serves, maybe 1602 in Europe, but 1600 here. Terrific little cars. But $6k seems a bit step for such a rough example that looks like it needs a whole lot of TLC.

That price is too much, but not, at least according to what I have seen in the past year or so looking at these and 2002s of all stripes, outrageous.

The market is hot for these little beauties.

Man does that car look like my old '68 1600.
All except the right side mirror and 1602 badge. My 1600 badge was up high like that too, no side markers, flush turn signals in front. Chaminois(sp?) over black. Had that car for 9 years and 100k+ miles. Great little car. Bought mine for $1600 w/25k showing on the odo in 1972 and sold it for $1500 with 38k showing in 1981 or so.
I don't think I appreciated what I had at the time, but I did like the fact that it was fun to drive and never really left me stranded in all that time.

Looks like the driver's side mirror is in a different location than mine was too.
I put Opel wheels on mine, just to be different.

I was considering it but not for that price. I would buy it for $1500 but not a dollar more...

Ok, i glanced again.

Correct generator instead of alternator, correct all metal bumpers.

The side view mirrors are not original, they should look like the one on Scotts car.

The dash should be all chrome on the bottom, can't tell what is going on there.

The market on the 2002s is on fire, owners just think that all of the sudden their junker is worth a ton...problem is that someone will give him his asking or close to it.
