I must be slightly cursed….

I know this is a first world problem, I shouldn't complain. But d@mn it! I'm cursed!

Last year my wife and I went to Germany to see a singer in concert who doesn't tour the states. She decided on the Stuttgart tour date so I could go to the Porsche Museum and drive the Nurburgring. Pretty cool of her.

On my 'Ring day, with light rain, some ****box BMW laid down a 2km long oil slick an hour before public lapping opened at 5:15pm. Since it was raining, the track deemed it too hard to clean and cancelled public lapping. I was signing the track rental car paperwork when the call came through. Since I had an appointment in the Porsche archives the next day, I was SOL. I was gutted, my wife even teared up knowing how much I wanted to do those 4 laps.

Forward one year later, the same performer is now doing a small arena, UK only, swing tour. So our tickets are for the Glasgow show. So the deal was I get to go back to the Museum to see the Le Mans display, and i get to do the 'Ring again. The problem is we get there on the Saturday of the 24 hrs of the Nurburgring. So Sunday is the race and Monday the track is closed for maintenance. My track car was rented for Tuesday and we are flying to Glasgow on Wednesday for the show. I know, this is all too close, too poor of planning. But this is how it worked out.

Last week the Nurburgring announced that they are having two "Motorcycle Only" lapping dates. The dates are May 20th and June 24. June 24th is the Tuesday after the race.

So yet again, I'm not going to get to drive the 'Ring. My wife said I can try again in a few years, when my son is old enough to appreciate the Porsche Museum and other cultural things. BUT D@MN IT!

So this is as close As I've gotten to the track

So does anyone know of things to do in Cologne?

You're traveling twice to Europe to see a singer perform for what? 2 hours?
Must be nice, sucks about the ring though. .... Just plan a week without the wife and get it done lol

I know, I sound like a brat. I didn't mention that the first trip my wife visited two companies that she did consulting for, one in Germany and one in Austria. And this trip I'm visiting a company I work with that based in Esslingen, just southeast of Stuttgart.

I just think its funny, of all of the days for the track to go motorcycle only, it was the one day I could go.

unless you are seeing the beatles with both lennon and harrison present, make concessions to get to the ring.

I spent a day at the ring 5 years ago and it was one of the most memorable experiences ever for me.

Cologne, check out the Dom, across the bridge is another old church (forgetting the name)...

Near to the Nuburgringen is Burg Elz castle, Cochem castle on the Mosel, drink some wine/visit a winery, Koblenz has the Deutche Eck where the Mosel and the Rhine merge. Go down to St Gore, the Lorelei Felsen, castles along the Rhine. Birkenstock factory is in that area, the bridge at Ramaugen...a lot of things all in that area!

You should have rented a bike and done it that way.

I forgot to tighten my oil filter. How many times do I have to apologize? But the bike day was awesome. Highly recommend!

There was a concert here I badly wanted to see back in January. I forget who it was exactly... it was on the day we left for California for the NAMM show.
Turns out, there was a California concert as well. Woohoo!
On the day we left to come back home...

missed 'em both.

I spent 2002 living in Bonn while working a program management contract. Truly an amazing number of reasons to visit and experience the area. Everyone should drive the Rhine and Mosel Valleys.

We used to rotate rental cars every thirty days (corporate insurance requirement as I recall). Those rentals saw a lot of laps around the Ring! :D Of course, that was in the pre-GPS days. Probably couldn't get away with that now.......

Some might view this as a sign to stay OFF the Ring. You never know...

DanielDudley 05-17-2014 01:58 AM

Schedule a Ring vacation. It isn't an add on.I flew out to California to drive Laguna Seca. The rest of the vacation was worked in around that.
