I like the places where they have the girls wearing short shorts on skates bring it to you on a tray in your car. Sonic out on Lake Conroe used to do that. Sitting around in a convertible watching pretty girls without much in the way of clothes and eating fast food. What is not to like about that?

They still do that here. Sonic is headquartered in OK. Lots of them here.

I expect more kiosks. My last drive-through order got messed up. The only place I have gone with a 100% success rate has been In N Out.

Wasn't there an accounting summary posted in PARF detailing the costs vs profit at your average fast food joint, showing the highest expense as employees? And that was at minimum wage. Imagine that cost raising by 80%. You would have to make cuts or changes all over.

IMO that's reflective of the higher wages that In N Out pays. Whereas most other fast food places start pay at around the $7-8 range, In N Out offers something like $10.50 starting pay. That was a few years ago, so for all I know it's higher now. But obviously more skilled people are going to be filling those similar level positions at In N Out, compared to the other burger joints and similar establishments.

One phenomenon of unintended consequences is that if we mandate a minimum wage of $15, in step-wise fashion we'll increase the pay of others as well. A bit of trickle-up economics? Though at some point pay simply won't increase because there aren't enough dollars to support everyone getting paid more. I'd imagine everything will cost a bit more (buying power will decrease) because labor costs will rise, at which point $15 won't be a living wage anymore. And so the cycle continues.

I don't go to those places too often, but I do notice the service or people working at In and Out are usually don't screw up that much or deal with what Heel and Toe described. I absolutely experience that at Micky D's. Same with Starbucks, my experiences have been great there each and every time so far (I almost live there.)

Where does one find all these high paying jobs? Last I heard we were in a recession and unemployment was over 6%.

Then you find another 2nd, low paying job until better opportunities come along.

The problem is that Prospero likely does nothing faster or better than she did her first year...so she is worth little more than the fellow that started last month. In a job like this, she does not have 14 years of valuable experience, but rather, one year of experience 14 times. She has done nothing to increase her value. She is not even bright enough to realize the simple business concept that the company would be better off financially to replace her than to raise her pay. There is a reason why most people use entry-level jobs for initial entry into the work force and then move on...or as a second job to supplement their income in a job where there is potential to move up.

I worked in fast food myself as a young man. It only took me a few months to move up into an assistant manager role and about a year to become a manager. There were people who were already there who did a decent job that had worked there for 20 years and had long ago maxxed out the pay for that class of employee. They simply chose not to or were unable to do the little bit extra it took to move up. They seemed satisfied with their position in life and had no inclination to work extra hours, learn additional skills, etc...while some of us worked as many hours as possible, volunteered to be called in for double shifts, to unload the trucks at 3 AM, etc.

Note also the ages of her children..2 yrs and 3 mths. So after 12 years of this job, she did not realize she could not afford a child. Then, after the first (which should have made her realize how expensive children are)...a little more than a year later...she got pregnant again?

Exactly! Not only do you increase your wages, but you double your opportunity to advance or learn new/additional skills.

Recession? That's rich coming from you.

You are being a hypocrite to defend your leftist agenda. Had this been a discussion about unemployment you and dipso would claim the exact opposite.

I'll take a stab at some answers:

1. Use this low paying job to educate yourself
2. Don't have kids until you can afford them
3. Be willing to move to a location where you can use your new education for higher paying work
4. Stop whining and expecting others to give you things or compensate you for your bad choices
5. Take accountability for yourself
6. Stop allowing foreign nationals to take jobs US citizens could do (why do we have so many different kinds of visas?)
7. Tax $1M+ incomes at 50% and use it to offer free university education to US citizens
8. Eliminate tax breaks for religion and all tax deductions
9. Eliminate capital gains tax
10. Introduce a flat tax

This is the failure of the liberal. Make excuses and expect others to pay for the mistakes of others. Hold no one accountable or responsible, except those who have worked hard and have accomplished points 1-5 above. What you missed is that they sacrificed. They paid their own way. They took the risks and when successful reaped the reward. Now you want them to pay for those who did not. Doesn't sound fair to me. In fact, sounds criminal.

He: 11.50 * 60 hours per week = $33,120.00 per year.

He can't survive on 30G a year?

...or he won't work 60 hours?
...or he can't get those hours and won't get a second job?
...or he refuses to move to a lower cost of living town?
...or what?

...his wife can't work another 20 hours per week boosting their income to $45k per year?

Sorry... I'm not seeing the issue? It's not that I'm unsympathetic, but I don't see his plight here. I'm starting to think that I work more hours per week than he does.

When labor prices increase, people find other ways to do the work or stop doing it altogether. I had a guy mowing the grass on my old home (have not sold it yet). He kept complaining about how tough life is for him and how "lucky" (well off) that I was and wanting to increase how much he charges (while not doing an especially good job). I got tired of it and bought a nice commercial mower and am doing it myself this year. It probably saves very little...but I also don't have to put up with the annoyance...and can use the mower for my own home.

One of the many downsides of Oblamacare is that many companies, universities, and organizations are now limiting their workforce to less than 30 hours/week in order to avoid fines and taxes. This means two or three jobs to get that many hours and still no healthcare.
