Striking fast food workers

Striking fast food workers

' Prospero Sanchez, Domino's Pizza, earns $11.50 an hour: "I've worked 14 years at Domino's and I can't support a family. I have a 2-year-old daughter and a 3-month-old son." '

OK...so you knew you could not support a family.......but you decided to have one anyway......and now it is someone else's fault that you cannot support them?

I am all for an increase in the minimum wage. But some people won't be helped by that.

if you can be replaced by one of these perhaps you aren't worth $15/hr

They would never try that siht in Mexico or any of those countries. They do it because we allow it and hand it to em'

If you've worked 14 years at a fast food establishment and haven't moved up to at least a store manager, you're doing something wrong...

Exactly... I got to know the owners of the mcdonalds in the town I grew up in. If they had someone that had been with them that long and was a good employee they would be into management and making much better than 11.50/hr...

Some people just don't put in the effort for more...

Wait a second here , cain't afford to raise your kids then what are you doing owning a porsche.

flipper35 05-16-2014 01:25 PM

The Domino's guy probably has a PS3, XBox and iPhone5 with unlimited data...

Hey, you make pizza not rockets!

I'm sure that degree from Domino U was crazy expensive though.

I clicked this thinking it was about committing simple battery upon fast food workers...

flipper35 05-16-2014 02:07 PM

Some need it.

What does he do at Dominos?

flipper35 05-16-2014 02:30 PM

True story at the drive thru.

Me: I want a number 5, large size with a diet coke.

Them: Do you want that Large size.

Me: Yes, with a diet coke.

Them: What would you like to drink.

...

I realize this sounds cold and heartless, but he's worked at Domino's for 14 years, but only had kids for 2. If he couldn't afford to raise a family on his income, he should have either gotten a higher paying job, or not had kids. That doesn't address the question regarding what should be considered fair pay for these low-wage jobs, but it does address his lack of personal responsibility in his current predicament.

There are no careers in the service industry until you transition into management. If you are moving out of a tipped position the transition will also involve a huge pay cut and double working hours.

One of the great mysteries for me:

As they hand me my "to go" order of food they never seem to figure out most people want some ketchup with fries, or hot sauce with Tex-Mex, or whatever condiment goes with that food. I ask for a package of ketchup and they had me a heaping handful of packets. I just want a normal human amount. I don't need 12 packages of ketchup, or a dozen extra napkins.

I get that same thing from managers to 16 year olds.

I know many of the folks on the board will say they only eat locally grown organic food raised by virgins and would never eat at a fast food restaurant. I eat fast food on occasion. Not regularly.

Fact is - some people are $5 an hour employees based on their ability to think/effort. Raise minimum wage - and they end up fired/without employment.

A lot of the guys at work got hired at low wages, and never held down a full time job before, those that chose to take the opportunities to work hard/improve themselves are now $20hr+ employees.

Having kids to feed should be motivation to find some effort to kick in some other form of income. My grand-dad had 6 kids, realized he was going to have a tough time with education, etc, and wrote a book that sold well, sold darn well, enough to put 6 kids through college.

Some people do side businesses in their spare time. These you can perhaps even involve your kids in making things to sell.

Depending on how "liberal" a goverment area is with its spending, which results in higher costs, the wages you can live on can vary by quite a lot. $10/hr will get you through life in some parts of this country, others, that won't get you squat.

As mentioned - raise the national minimum wage to fit the higher cost areas of the country - and the lower cost areas will be forced to replace those workers with machines.

Rusty914s 05-16-2014 03:12 PM

Tervurin, is your commentary opinion or based on legitimate studies?

In a world where a ****-sandwich like red lobster sells for 2.1 billion and the employees have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet or worse yet, the company's workforce gets subsidized by the tax payer via food stamps, etc...you guys don't see anything wrong with that?

Take walmart, the heirs are worth north of like 30-40 billion per and we, as taxpayers subsidize their workforce through government benefits, food stamps, section 8, etc.

I simply don't care about how much the worker makes but I do care that I am funding corporations that have zero to do with me.

And yeah, a big fail to have kids she. You can't afford them...but, that's a function of very little education, lack of access to medical care, and lack if access to abortion clinics.

I wonder why that happens?

Minimum wage jobs are not "career" jobs. They are entry level jobs. If these people want to make more money, than go find a job where you can earn what you need and stop bellyaching about it.
