Back from PA--

I had to go to Pittsburgh for a meeting yesterady and today. Although I had a rental, the roads were really in pretty good shape. I would love to drive the back roads that you can see from the interstate. BYW-what the heck is with the crazy a$$ bottleneck in downtown? It seemed like a free for all trying to get into the right lanes although the tunnel would be awesome to rip through in the 911. We were at the Doubletree Hilton off of Mansfield road. The view from the hotel was beautiful with the mountains and rolling hills. Of to bed now after a nice 6 hours drive home.

Pittsburgh has many areas which you described--the "bottleneck squeeze" trying to get through the Ft Pitt tunnels--even worse are the Squirrel Hill tunnels--awlays congested out there. Glad you enjoyed the city--Pittsburgh does have some wonderful views--I still love driving through the Ft Pitt tunnels on a nice day and seeing the city/Golden Triangle just pop into view.

As an out-of-towner, the Ft Pitt tunnel, and the exits on the city side, are a complete clusterfudge that makes absolutely no sense.

The scene when you go through that long tunnel heading east and the city is right in front as you exit is KEWL looking. And awesome. It's like hte city is built next to three rivers or something like that. There's no place to pull over and stop to take pics, and they get really weird if you stop to take pics in the fast lane. Prolly shouldn't do that. Looks like this going into the tunnel: and like this coming out. Notice the difference? Last edited by sammyg2; 05-21-2014 at 06:56 AM..

being an ex-P burgher, I can attest to the craziness of getting from downtown into the Ft. Pitt tunnel. But can also attest to the incredible bang you get when you exit the tunnel on the downtown side and see the view. 1/49.- Pittsburgh, View from the Fort Pitt tunnel. VIRTOURIST.COM

That is exactly where our 5 series wagon met is's demise. A lady merged right into the passenger door while moving pretty fast.

I took the Amish crew that re roofed my house home the other day and after I left the last guy off, I had no idea where I was and they all lived close to me. had to use my phone to get me home! There are roads back there in "their" neck of the woods I have never been on.

I love Pittsburgh. Great town and people. The Squirrel Hill Tunnel traffic sucks for no good reason.

Didn't get a chance to check out the town tho, had to get to Jeanette on a tight schedule. After watching a go-zillion episodes of diners, drive-ins, and dives I bet there's some pretty good food in that town. Hay, that's a topic I haven't seen in PPOT, triple D. Good show, makes me hungry. Gonna hafta start a new thread.
