Some idiots should not be dog owners!

Just got in from a job site and when I pulled out and started down the street a couple houses down I see a dog sniffing around on the right side of the road.

I immediately go into "amber alert - lost baby - concern-mode" slow to a stop about 20 feet back on the far left of the road and then just watch. About 10 seconds later I hear this lady from the property on my left yell out the dog's name and say "Seriously?" Poor dog starts back across the road while the lady yells at him saying "Get in the garage...now!".

Poor dog's head drops...ears go down...tail between legs...slowly trots towards garage.

Way to go lady......yell at your dog....that will really show him who is boss.

Poor dog......I'm going to go back by later and leave a copy of the 10 Canine Commandments in her mailbox.....

Baz, good post. When my dog Max had to be put down (at 14 1/2 years of age) I was there with him at the end. How could I not be? He was always there for me.

One of his usual activities in later years:

my wife does the same thing to me. You mean they weren't suppose to yell?

There are a bazillion people who procreated...and many have never given actual thought about what it means to be a parent, "raising" their kids like feral cats and dogs.

Need a license to own a dog or catch a fish, but none required to have a child.

We sure made progress moving from the greatest generation to the Pepsi Generation, Gen X, etc.

Baz, I really love those Canine Commandments as no truer words could be spoken. If people could just realize that the 15 years or so go by mighty quick and it is absolutely heartbreak to lose one. My little furry pal brings me to laughter every wonderful day with him.

Baz, while I agree with your sentiments, if you leave it in her mailbox, it will possibly make her angry and ashamed and she might take it out on the dog.

I would print it out, wait until I saw her, then walk over and tell her what a beautiful dog she has and how I saw this on the Internet and thought she might enjoy it. :)

I remember something years ago in my neighborhood. A family down the block got a cute new German Shepherd puppy. I'm guessing it was what you might think of as a teenager, young and no yet full size, but looking mostly like an adult. It used to get out and run down the block a lot. I'd hear the father walking after it with the - spot come here you stupid dog. come on you idiot dog. etc...

One day we were working in the back yard going through the house with both the front and back doors open. It ran down, ran right into the house and out into the back yard where everyone was working. It was very cute and very sweet and just wanted to play. Another time I was out washing the car. It ran right up to meand sat down at my feet. That time the young 11 -13 year old daughter was chasing it down the block yelling - come here you stupid dog etc....

I remember telling him as he sat in front of me - I understand, they aren't as smart as you. I wouldn't want to live with them either. And I was thinking that the daughter was mimicking her father's behavior which isn't good.

I also wanted to tell the dad that if he thought the dog was stupid, what did that make them since they couldn't keep the dog contained.

I hope he ended up having a happy life.

A lady scolded her dog for leaving the garage and going into the street where he might get run over?

Guess I'm an idiot dog owner too, and I've had dogs almost my whole life.

The dog I have now knows he's not supposed to wander off into the street.

You OBVIOUSLY have a MUCH smarter dog than she does, Sammy.

Thanks Doc but realistically I don't know how anyone could get mad at their dog after reading those Canine Commandments - especially with the Lab portrait included.

I know I am probably giving humans too much credit here but that's a powerful piece and one that (IMHO) should hit home with anyone - including the clueless.

Thanks for your post, Doc.

Baz and Rot

Rot --great picture

The commandments tell me you get it as it goes with dogs. Its the best -most painful contract Ive ever had. Thats why I keep reloading. The way the strong treats the weak defines character.

Baz, I saw this thread earlier, but knowing how you feel about dawgs, I just didn't respond. I like those 10 commandments too, and I'll hold 'em in my arms for their final journey....got to. That said, my last lab only crossed the street ONCE to great the neighbors in their driveway when she was probably 6-7 months old...If you had heard me "BAD DOG" her mercilessly you'd have probably thought I was a bad owner too....nuthin' could be further from the truth. Put her down at 14....she never needed a leash even if I was walking a busy street for the last 13.5 years of her life. Trained to max with voice/hand signals...I agree with Sammy on this one. How DO you correct "unacceptable" behavior which is absolutely hazardous to your beloved "kid's health". It's called TOUGH LOVE...now I wasn't there to witness what you saw, but there are "shades of grey". I'm certainly not gonna mistreat them (quite the contrary...I have "the gift" when it comes to training and caring for dogs and I spoil 'em rotten)....please don't judge too harshly. Just my .02 worth...YMMV.

mikesride 05-21-2014 03:28 PM

I have yelled at my dog as well....If you've ever had a Beagle get away on you, you'd know the only way to break her focus on her nose is a good crisp shout!!!!
Now, what Baz describes is likely a lazy dog owner.

Chocaholic 05-22-2014 04:25 AM

I call our lab/boxer mix "noodle-brain" all the time. But in our case he really is a noodle-brain. Fortunately, he doesn't understand much English. I sometimes call him shtihead too. He has no clue!
