1998 BMW auto trans question.
I'm looking at a 1998 BMW 323i cab in great shape with an auto trans for nice days, but the seller says it needs a new trans. The car is about $1500 obo. From what I've read, there are two auto trans for this year.
Are they interchangeable? Are other BMW trans/years interchangeable? Is it hard to rebuild one? My local shop want $2800-$3200 to R&R the trans with rebuilt. Lots of money there. They are getting back to me about just a rebuild and I R&R it. What about used? What are my chances of getting a used one? Thanks. Last edited by A930Rocket; 05-23-2014 at 04:46 PM.. |

not interchangeable but many years will fit. Get the tag/part number, that will tell you which one it has so you can do some more research, but they usually go for @$ 700 used.

You can find used "tested" BMW transmissions for about $750-1200 on the interwebs

ZF Tranny......
You should be able to find a rebuilt unit for around $1300 or so (with core exchange).

FWIW doing a manual swap on a car like that would be a piece of cake. Probably under $1000 in (used) parts with a (new) clutch and flywheel.

Thanks guys. I drive a 5 speed every day and the rest of the family is shifting impaired, so I'll stick with an auto.
