The Ferrari 4 cylinder engines were not slouches btw. It was a trade off a better power curve, vs more peak HP. The Ferrari 4's were 200-280HP engines depending on displacement, and the 3.0L V12's were close to 300HP.
Ferrari developed both 4's and 12's at the same time and ran them in nearly identical chassis to play off different strengths for the constructors championship.
