How Big A Smartphone Screen?

For my next iPhone (the 6), it appears I will have a choice of 4.7" and 5.5" (diagonal) screens, compared to the current iPhone 5's 4.0" (my family has) and the iPhone 4S' 3.5" (my present phone ). Yes, Apple is following the trend to larger phone screens.

Since Samsung and others have had large phones for some time, I expect we've plenty of experience here in the pros and cons of switching from small phones to large phones.

My questions to those who have tried both: Which do you prefer? And why?

stomachmonkey 05-26-2014 07:30 AM

Not a fan of the phablets. Several friends have them and they always feel unwieldy to me.

Personally I don't like the current iPhone 5 screen size either.

I like the real estate but the length makes me hold it in a way that hurts my pinky, I have a tendency to rest the bottom of the phone on the extended finger. Does not help that I had previously broken that knuckle and it's bothered me ever since.

I liked the 4's screen / ergonomics better.

following the trend? The USS Following, sailed years ago. More like Apple, Finally, kicking and screaming, admits that massive pixel-count packed in a itty-bitty screen is not the best solution.

^^^this

I'm waiting for Samsung to come out with their 1G-retro "brick" phone with a 12" screen. ;)

wdfifteen 05-26-2014 08:58 AM

I'm ready to go back to a flip phone and carry my iPad when I need more real estate. The screen on my 5s is plenty big.

LakeCleElum 05-26-2014 10:24 AM

I-Phone 5 fits OK in my pocket. Don't want anything bigger until I start carrying a PURSE..

porsche4life 05-26-2014 10:45 AM

Exactly, I liked the 4, am OK with the 5. Any bigger and I'm going to have to start wearing cargo pants to carry it in.

Jim Richards 05-26-2014 10:52 AM

MC Hammer pants

porsche4life 05-26-2014 10:56 AM

Not quite my style. ;)

Jim Richards 05-26-2014 11:00 AM

But think how big a smartphone you can carry (on each side)

widebody911 05-26-2014 12:07 PM

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (aka phablet) and I love it. To hell with your tiny little zoolander phones.

I have big hands and the bigger screen makes texting actually feasible for me.

cantdrv55 05-26-2014 12:50 PM

I have the 5 and find its screen size just adequate. I'd rather go with the Note 3. Hopefully its battery life is better than the crappy one in the i5.

I'm plenty happy with my iPhone 4S. Hard for me to divine a reason for upgrading just for screen size.

Shaun @ Tru6 05-26-2014 03:14 PM

My iPhone 5 is as big as I would ever want, if anything, I'd want it to be lighter. I don't know what I'd use the extra real estate for, maybe Waze.

jyl 05-26-2014 04:21 PM

I use protective cases on my phones, making them larger yet.

My iPhone 4S in an Otterbox case still fits in my dress shirt pocket, front pocket of skinny-ish jeans, phone pouch on strap of backpack, etc.

Where / how do you carry the larger phones?

stealthn 05-26-2014 05:09 PM

Where are you finding the "proof" there will be a bigger phone?

I had to laugh when I held up this huge android to my ear, it looks as stupid as google glass

Brando 05-26-2014 06:09 PM

I got the s4 mini because I didnt want the 40" screen of the full S4. Better display with the amoled at 60dpi and 1920 resolution. This one phone is WAY better than my old moto bionic and I get just as much battery life with the stock S4 battery as I had with the bionic with extended battery pack. Rooting it was way easier too.

I vote to go with what feels best in your hand and is practical. I am not a fan of the Phablets either. I have a laptop I can use for real browsing and downloading. My phone doesnt have to be an all-in-wonder solution.

jyl 05-26-2014 07:43 PM

Just the Apple rumour mill, although there are so many bits and pieces of info leaked that it seems pretty solid. However, it also sounds like the bigger (phablet) model might not be until early 2015.

I thought size didn't matter.

4S screen is fine. I'm on a 5S now and that's fine. If I want bigger I use my iPad.

petrolhead611 05-27-2014 02:30 AM

At first I thought that my Blackberry Z30 was going to be way to big to live with, but it does fit in trouser pockets, and the big screen means that carrying around a tablet is unnecessary.

You young pups with perfect eyes and tiny hands have fun squinting at your fancy dancy new fangled old fashioned apple products that get repackaged every year and sold as new.

After using an iPhone 3 & 4, I switched to an S4. It really was vision dictated, got tired of having to pull out the reading glasses every time I wanted to use the damn thing, having large hands also made the iPhone a pita.

GH85Carrera 05-27-2014 04:32 AM

My buddy has an iPad with the cellular data plan. It is not really supposed to work as a phone BUT...

With SKYPE you can indeed make a phone call with an iPad. Several of his friends have the giant cell phones. He went to a birthday party with many of his buddies there. He called the host and came walking in while holding the iPad to his head like a giant cell phone. He got a good laugh.

andyt11 05-27-2014 05:01 AM

When I first got my S3, I nearly didnt buy it because I didnt like the fact that it was so big, but they are so slender you barely notice it in your pocket, and the screen (just shy of 5") is really nice for browsing etc... I don't need an ipad or any other device.

Now its time for a new phone and I'm having te same thoughts. I dont want anything bigger than the S3. Will be looking at the S5 but I'm not sure how big it is.

id10t 05-27-2014 05:21 AM

Very very happy with the form factor of my iPhone 4.

Wish it had more CPU and storage, or that I hadn't upgraded from iOS 6.x, but ....

Jim Richards 05-27-2014 05:35 AM

Yep.

pitargue 05-31-2014 07:33 AM

I find the size of the iPhone 4s perfect for one handed operation. Had a larger Motorola which required 2 hands pretty much all the time. Defeats the purpose of a handheld device, imho.

vash 05-31-2014 09:35 AM

I'm on a five s. I could use a bit more real estate. That is if buttons and icons are bigger.

Wife has a 5S and the son a 5. I like the size.

island911 06-02-2014 01:41 PM

Apple isn't Samsung, and therefore they simply can't afford to offer more selection to it's buyers than the one-size-fits-all iphone. And, If you don't agree that the iPhone is --and always will be-- the most perfect phone Evar conceived you prolly wear cargo pants and therefore should just go end it all. No, wait ... that's not right.

What's the problem?!

island911 06-02-2014 02:33 PM

Even more awkward are those using their tablets for taking pictures.

Komenda Fan 06-02-2014 03:08 PM

I wasn't sure when I bought the Blackberry Z30, thought it might be too big, but it fits in my pockets without trouble, and I couldn't go back to a small screen now. It's replaced my tablet entirely, and even my laptop only really sees much in the way of use when I have a lot of writing to do (like I'm supposed to be doing now).

[hijack]

I took the dash logger out of one of my racecars rather than bring the laptop to the car I brought the dash to the couch :p

And realized the display on my Razr Maxx is bigger than the display on the Aim MyChron Plus that is in my 911...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1401755493.jpg

I really just look at the dash in my peripheral vision its set such that if EGT,AF, oil pressure or temp exceed preset limits, bright LEDS illuminate, And the progressive shift lights signal shift points....

The screen on the Aim dash is 3.75 in dia, the screen on my Droid is 4.25 in...

[/hijack]

My next smartphone will be a Nexus 5, it has a nice 5 in dia screen in a form factor that is just slightly larger than the Droid Maxx

No. The idea is it works with wearables. (Bluetooth headset, and such)

For people who need to carry a tablet computer, why not let it have phone connectivity as well...

Steve Carlton 06-03-2014 12:48 PM

Ladies are impressed with my large phone.
