Quick question for a doc?

Would one of the docs mind a (hopefully) quick and easy question via PM about heart rate?

Thanks!

You need one.

That will be $100.

krystar 05-28-2014 09:28 PM

it should be between 40 and 200. that'll be $200 :P

He didn't ask for a specialist :-)

Jim Richards 05-29-2014 04:57 AM

It often varies.

I'll bill your insurance and let you know how much you'll have to cover afterwards.

Mine was 56 bpm at my recent physical. She asked if I was sleeping, no just relaxed :-) Lower is better, I'll only charge $50.

Jim Richards 05-29-2014 06:34 AM

At some point, lower is not better. I'll toss this in for free.

While we're at it...

Step-son recently was asking about heart rate (not exactly sure why). So, I taught him how to check his own, and he's sitting at around 90-102 bpm. I know that's a bit high, but anything to worry about? He's not fat--at all, relatively acitve (I told him to start doing more cardio workouts). For reference, he's 13.

He should go see a doctor if there is any doubt. About 7 years ago I was diagnosed with hypertension(high blood pressure) and I was prescribed pills for it.

I bought a blood pressure monitor back when I was 60 yo. It is reassuring to know heart rate and blood pressure info at a push of a button.

Cheers, Guy.

My resting is about the same... my max is what concerns me. ...I consistently see reasons over 230 while lifting, using several different monitors

Gogar 05-29-2014 07:52 AM

230 is probably too high; make sure the monitors you're using have fresh batteries.

That'll be $250, you'll get a bill in the mail; please pay it immediately. Your insurance will cover some of it and send you a revised bill the day after you send in your check for the original $250 and you can fight them for a few months trying to get a refund and then finally give up in disgust and they'll just keep the money you overpaid.

.Holy cr-p! Here is my caveat. I am not a doctor. You should see a doc for guidance.
230 heart rate seems high to me.

General guideline is max rate of 220 minus your age. So for me it is 220 - 67 =
153 max heart rate. Last year I was hiking up a mountain pass and was getting 190 heart rate according to my gps monitor. I had to stop every 20 yards to catch my breath. My doc said that I was foolish to do that and should keep hr in the 120's max. Risk of a heart attack etc.....

Hope this helps! G.

I'm not a doctor, but I did play one several times when I was young. In my opinion 230 is way, way high and might indicate a problem. Also, in my opinion, it shouldn't be anywhere near that high while lifting. I don't think many of the doctors here would feel confident commenting without more solid info. The max I counted mine (using my neck artery & second hand on a watch) was somewhere around 200, and that was hiking at 11K feet in the mountains two days after riding in on horseback. I think I might get some medical evaluation if I were you.

jyl 05-29-2014 09:14 AM

Check the monitors' accuracy by manually feeling pulse/counting for 15 sec.

Also get on an exercise bike and see what HR you get.

If it is actually 230, that would worry me. 220-age is a very rough formula and I don't take it too seriously (my max HR by that should be 169 but I routinely am 180+ when cycling and have seen 195), but well over 200 is pretty darn high.

HHI944 05-29-2014 12:10 PM

I have checked manually before and gotten roughly 4bps

My lifting routine isn't quite typical, I do a lot of lower weight farmers walk. ... running up and down stairs rather than just walking.

You had your arteries counter-balanced before assembly, right? You should be fine.

Cajundaddy 05-29-2014 03:05 PM

Don't do meth just before you take your heart rate. :)
