Mods/Admins - photo upside down issue?!?
Can someone PLEASE tell me how to keep my photos from loading upside down, or how to flip them when they do at least???
I'm using a Mac, I've loaded many photos to posts here in the past with no problems, now all of a sudden pics load upside down (and no, I didn't move to Australia!). When I have a question about an issue on my car that is best explained through a photo, instead of getting useful information from other users, I have to filter through all of the "your car is upside down" comments. I've scoured the FAQ section and found no help. Since I see others having the same issue, maybe the solution could be put in the FAQs. Love this site, please help! |
I send myself photos via email from my ipad or iphone. If they appear upside down in the email I edit and save them right side up.

The black magic of iPhone photos and upside down or sideways is a mystery for all.
I fought with it and never did figure out a logical reason for it. I can take a photo with my phone and upload it with Tapatalk and it will appear right side up everytime. If I connect my phone to the PC I use and access the photo like any other USB device it may or may not show up as upside down. The thumbnail may show upside down but it opens up normal. The only way I have found to know it will load correctly is to open the image in photoshop and crop and resize it down a little. Save it with a different file name and then use the upload photo link. I usually delete the geo-tag for the photo if it is from my house. If it is a photo from some other location I don't care about I don't bother to remove the geo-tag. |
Wonder if it has anything to do with lens position when a photo is taken.
When taken in landscape the lens could be either on the left or right side. Is the lens position is used for orientation reference? No clue but seems plausible. |

Some cameras - mostly phones/tablets - store rotation information in the exif data for the image. Some browsers (and local machine image viewers) will interpret that data and reorient the image automagically, some won't.
So... you post a pic from your phone, you see it normal but others may see it rotated... or not. |
Edit it in Preview just a little bit and resave it.
Why? Who knows. |
