Von,

Did you have to change that final gear to make one of your Unimogs to run at 65mph?

Yes, the gearing in the axles have been changed to 4.93/1 from standard of 6.56./1. Top speed should be close to 80mph. Not that I want to go that fast, but it will be nice to cruse at 65mph and only be turning about 24-2500 rpm's.

stock they top out at 50?

Depending on what size tires you have on them and which model. My yellow truck has standard gearing and 14.5x20 tires and tops out at 58mph. But I'm turning 3100 rpm's. Which is racing for a diesel. The sweet spot on these motors is about 24-2700 rpm's.

Added some bling to the cab today. My buddy laser cut out a new grill out of 1/8" steel. Just had to cut out the old and weld in the new!

Put the cab on the chassis today to check clearances of turbo and to fit the air/water intercooler, heat exchanger and AC.

Sorry if you already mentioned this, but what is the popcorn material used for undercoating? My truck restoration needs something to kill sound and protect from rust. Did you have to go bare metal for that to work?

vonsmog 03-23-2017 04:40 AM

Finally got back to work on my own truck after all this time. I decided its time to finally finish my own truck! So I dropped off the cab to the paint shop, and welded up the 3-way dump box with a new bed star and 1/8" diamond plate steel floor. I added eight recessed 1 ton tie downs as well. Had to stretch the spider frame so it would dump out the back and weld in mounts for the dump cyl. Hope to have it done by June!

Not as of yet, I have contacted about 8 different truck scrap yards in Europe, but have only heard back from one so far and they did not have it. Many have photos on their sites showing the part I need on motors, so hopefully one will be willing to part with one.

Been a while since I updated this thread. Didn't find my intake pipe before I made my own. Then finally did get one, but like the one I made better, so will be running that one. Got the cab and bed back from the paint shop. Had spray in bedliner done on both sides of the bed and the bottom of the cab and in the engine compartment. Now I am just getting the cab interior done before putting it on the chassis. As it is way easier to work on when its down low, vs being up in the air on the chassis.

Looks stout. Hard not to love a Unimog. Stellar restoration as well.

vash 08-27-2017 10:09 AM

Jeez. I wish we were neighbors! That is coming along nice!

I've often wondered where Leland is with his FJ restoration.

brainz01 08-27-2017 11:23 AM

Gorgeous. We could use more Mogs in Houston right now.

So if I want to drive one of these into the garage, will an 8' high door work or do I need to go to 9' ?

My 404 barely clears my 8' door

What do you mean "barely?" That is at least a few inches.

Barely clears is what the brake caliper does with the wheel on a "Jeep" autocrosser I saw last weekend. I think I could fit a business card between them.

Von, your intake thing with the right paint on it would look perfect. That bed is the cat's ass man.
