Why do businesses care if we "LIKE" them on social networks?
Does it make them money if they get more accolades on Instagram or Facebook?

"Like us on facebook" and get 10%off. Wtf does that do? Hell with them since I dont do facebook.
|
Now.......If they said, "Like us on disgruntled book"..........I'd be there.

social media is a powerful advertising tool these days, cheap and extraordinarily effective.
likes are lie word of mouth referrals. |
From what I understand from my Web people Google uses facebook. The more likes you have the more relevant you are the higher you rank the more exposure. This is especially so with mobile users (smart phones, tablets, ipad, etc). A lot of businesses now have two websites. One designed for desktop users and one for mobile. We are having a mobile site designed now. I understand Twitter is becoming relevant with Google also.

I own a business and use Facebook, according to my SEO people it drives you up in Google but also is a tool to drive traffic from Facebook to your website. |
When my friends (or random strangers) "Like" my Facebook 917 Facebook page, they then on their wall when I post something. Their friends also have a chance to see it. It's basically word of mouth advertising and free. The more likes I have, the more my product is seen.

What I dont understand is when companies like Nestle or similar have "Follow us on FB" in the TV ads. Who the heck wants to follow such a company on FB? People have to much time!
|
We're not Nestle, but we have 1-day specials (percent off, etc) that are only advertised on Facebook. If you follow us, you can save money. And if you are looking at our FB page you aren't looking at the competition's.
|
When you or someone follows them it provides them with tangible proof that the ad they ran was indeed watched. Not only that, it shows them they have people who like their product so much that they went the extra step and took action to prove it. Now they have a database of their own with information they can use to send direct ads to people. They do that via FB or Twitter or whatever social media site they are using. This also builds up FB's database on what is trending and what people or you specifically like.
|
I "like" or Follow my local restaurants and butcher because I enjoy hearing about specials, what's going on, and similar events. The butcher posts their daily market sandwich - yummy!
People follow our winery facebook page for similar reasons - to see what is going on. While there certainly are negative issues, ultimately it is all about community and connection. These are positive attributes for social media IMHO. |
Thanks for all the explanations. Makes sense. Now to figure out why some lady I barely knew in high school needs to tell us all that she got new shoes for her kids.

You should ask your SEO guy(s) to quantify this and show you in your analytics how it is driving conversion aka ROI.
Social is worthless for rankings. Google has said themselves that they do not value keyword driven referrals from any social site. They are the equivalent of rel=nofollow links. However, social can help with your visibility if a large amount of relevant traffic comes in. "Liking" your page does nothing without the traffic to your site. Couple this with the cost to "reach" your followers with paid ad posts your return dindles. FYI, it takes about 12,500 referrals from any social site to have any affect on relevance. Facebook, twitter, reddit, Your SEO guy(s) should be focusing on content building, off-site link-building strategies, and your directories. I can provide more details. I just finished building one of the most comprehensive SEO products in my industry. We're 3 weeks into rolling it out across our client base and have seen substantial improvements in organic rankings. TLDR: Social is a traffic driver, not a ranking/positioning driver. Quote:

I've been at restaurants that offer discounts or free food like a dessert for liking them on FB. I do it, I mean who doesn't want free food especially dessert!

Facebook and other social media stuff is as stupid as it gets......
Once you like someone/thing on FB they Pwn you, i would have all your demographics, smart companies also setup web becons so I know how long you are on each page, where you go after, etc. No more secrets.... |
FB makes a LOT OF SENSE for businesses to use to stay in touch with their customers. It makes less sense for the customer, which is why we promote specials and customer recognition via Facebook.
|
Facebook has become it's own micro-economy. Look at Zynga & their apps/games. The currency is user info. Almost as bad as iOS/iTunes market and Google Play.
