Head-turner

Just a stupid question. Has anyone experienced the same.

Boys 8-14 love my car and will stare at it until they can't see it.

Corvette drivers don't even look at my car.

Females under the age of 25 glance but don't stare.

Guys in Datsons remark, "nice car, wanna trade?"

All others are self-consumed in their SUV's and fail to notice
German engineering at its best.

The reason I ask is due to the fact that I fit none of the above and still stare at Porsches until they are gone from sight (approximately 1.5 seconds).

Yeah, little kids love 'em. Its a blast to see real little kids (always boys) maybe 4 or 5, pointing and doing that wide eyed thing little kids do. Keeps you young.....

Some will grow up and up and buy them.

Fellas, we must live on a different planet. I was stationary at a set of lights in the city today, with the windows open as always next to a bunch of 12 year old schoolboys. I got called:

A Wanker
The car is a **** heap
"My brother's Supra would kill that c*nt"

And many other things I couldn't make out.

This happens a lot. One common element is that the Porsche hating kids are always "ethnically challenged" if you know what I mean. (Trying to be PC probably stuffing it up)

Well Victor

the thing is....the amount of smoke blowing out of yours makes you pretty easy bait. Whatever you do, dont stop, you'll have half a dozen midget kick boxers on you in a second

hahaha I've had the same thing

one kid was waiting at a stop light, came up to my car while I was waiting at a light and asked if I could rev the car for him...and all his friends at the stop started cheering

I was in a parking lot once and a son and father were waliking past and the son tugs on the fathers pants and says..."that car is cool dad" and his dad relied "its a porsche sone, it a porsche"

hahaha I love it...

and any attention my car gets I return it with some sort of recognition, cuz I still remember all the guys with cool cars that were pricks or friendly when I was a kid...

Yeah kids on BMX bikes can't get enough. Teenage girls seem to yell "cool car" on a regular basis. Sometimes slack jawed yokels even stare...but then again I think they stare at everything.

My experience is that kids between 4 and 10 and boys between 16 and 18 react positively. Sometimes I can read their lips when driving past them. "Hey....P o r s c h e" is what they mostly say as they tap their friend on the shoulder. After that they just stare.

Victor

Because of you I've just learned a new expression; "Ethnically challenged" LOL

Yup on the kids. I always tell them that they will own one as well and to try to do all the wrenching themselves.

Just priming the next generation of hot-rodders!

Porsches are not as common here as perhaps in other places, so I get a lot of stares. Females look, but it's the guys that stare a gawk. Kids appreciate it more than adults, but around 50% of males look, and half of them stare.

Walking out to the high school parking lot after one of my daughters volleyball games - 9:30PM.

Two seniors stop, and tell me "You Porsche is seriously cool, Mr Kelly." I ask 'em if they'd like to take a closer look.

30 minutes later they have their first real education on sports cars, weight distribution, power to weight, etc.

They quickly realised that the cr*p they've been fed by the ricer brigades was just that. They were stunned that we run our cars at the Glen, Laguna Seca, and other major tracks.
Got really interested. I've promised 'em a drive once they can show me that they know how to handle a stick shift. They will

Its kinda strange. My 13yo boy has had his head in the rice bowl for a year or so, but recently saw one of the local 944 race tuners cars on the street [Dr John's car], and from that day has had his heart set on a 944 for his first car.

There IS hope for this generation. We just need to lead 'em to the light.

It's not just kids and young folks that notice. Last Friday night while washing my car in the driveway two elderly women strolling the neighborhood (probably late 70s-80s) stopped to chat and inquire about the car. They didn't have to be told what it was either. One lady's grandson had a 911 for a while, she remarked he was only 21 then and couldn't handle the responsibility and wrecked it. One asked if the paint was original, was supprised when I said yes, then remarked you must take good care of it. You could see their appreciation of the styling. That's something that's ageless.

I need to move.

I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've received a complement or even a second glance at any 911 I've owned. Spanning around 20 years. Including some really nice ones (SC, '86 Carrera, 70S).

Certainly never had anyone "stare" at any of them.

I guess seeing one at every other stoplight doesn't help exclusivity.

914's are a different story - I'd get lots of nice comments on my 914s - mostly "Nice car, I had one of those in the '70s" or some variation of that.

One time there was a young couple smooching on the sidewalk. As I drove by, the guy loosened his liplock on the babe and pushed her to the side to watch the car. I couldn't believe it.

I have had the same sort of reaction from people driving the '69 and from riding the bike....stares...some comments (some good...some rude)..but at least I get noticed.
I guess it's the showoff in me...(bad trait)...but I can't help it...I've always liked the different..more stylish...unusual cars and bikes.
My ready answer to rude remarks (if I give one at all)..."You too could drive (ride) something as cool as this if you gave up cigarettes and hanging out on streert corners"
It puts the thought in the back of their feeble minds...insidious....hope it gives them nightmares for weeks....LOL

I have to admit to being surprised by the reactions I get in public. Taking my 911 anywhere is more an event than simply a afternoon drive. Stares, comments, etc. A few weeks ago a fellow passing me in a parking lot threw on his brakes, stopped, reversed to pull beside me and yelled "is that a 912?" out this window. [ my steel wheels fooled him! ]

An unexpected aspect of ownership. Totally fun!

I've had the same thing happen while at a parking lot. Dad and his young son about 8 comes out of the restaraunt and the kid comes over to the car.

The dad follows behind him telling him the difference between the P-car and his camaro he has at home. The kid listens while I tell him a little about the car and was all excited to see the engine in the rear.

The gal who works in my office has a son about 16 and since I started talking to him about the P-car, he became interested. Well, last week I did the SC Motorsports DE and hung a pic on the office wall of the car and me at the track.

Yesterday he saw the pic of the car for the first time and said it was "way cool". Now, he and a couple of his friends want to go to the next Porsche event at Road Atlanta.

I like the idea of doing this because it will give him a chance to see what P-cars are made of plus he knows you don't have to do any mods to get them on the track. Maybe I've started something - trying to get him and his friends to do a autocross.

Cool Lookers

The other day, I was sitting in traffic in my '80 911SC coupe (black metallic / tan leather / polished 7 & 8 Fuches) and a car load of high school age girls pulled up behind me. After a couple of minutes, the one riding shotgun leaned forward to better read the "911SC script on the deck lid and said (ok, so I was lip reading) "WHAT'S THAT?" and the driver replied "I DON'T KNOW, BUT I WANT ONE!". Also, I got into a little speed contest with a dude on a decked out Harley one day. He was amazed that his scoot couldn't outrun my Pcar. At the next red light he gave me the thumbs up! Just gotta love these cars!
