Volvo V70 PCV

Volvo inline five cylinder engines have an odd PCV system. Essentially they go to a catch-can attached to the block and the oil/vapor/condensate is returned to the case.

The OEM system is under the intake manifold and really hard to get at to repair

I modified my system to add a generic PCV valve on top of the engine. This is piped to a small reservoir and then piped to the intake manifold.

The problem is I am getting a lot of condensate in my catch can. I suspect that this might be a result of blow-by on the rings? The car runs really well, there can't be a lot wrong with my engine and it recently passed emissions testing with a clean bill of health. (engine has about 180,000 miles and does not smoke)

These engines are notorious for milky froth on the dipstick, my PCV system prevents that, the oil looks great, but I have to dump the watery oily mess every two weeks.

Maybe forget the whole 'containment' idea and drip the residue onto the road like lots of other people do?

Have you invested in the VIDA-DiCE setup yet? Volvo really has it figured out when it comes to getting you into the stealership. I drew the line and sold it (2002 V-70) when i realized I would have to take it to the dealer to have my ECS box reprogrammed/coded to my VIN. Seems like there is a module for just about everything on those cars.

Try a different design pcv. Try to find one that doesn't have the big hole exposed. I bet it's just sucking the oil right through...

Except that it's a good % water....

And I'm reluctant to restrict the flow as these engines tend to blow out the cam seal.

If that's the turbo motor, wait until the oil return line cokes up and you need to repair it.....MOFO to get at.

Non-turbo this time.

I did the head, turbo, and lines on my 850 turbo. Yes, mofo.

I'd love to see a picture of your PVC solution though!

That would be embarrassing.

I believe it is mostly water, I will inspect it more closely this weekend.

I was assuming it was condensate, but now I am wondering of you are correct. Perhaps I dismissed your suggestion too quickly.

The way Volvo does the PCV it doesn't matter how much oil flows, it all end up back in the case. I can't take too much oil away.
