She: Whenever it rains, the yellow light on the dashboard keeps flickering on and off.
Me: That's a worry, which light?
She: The one with the exclamation sign and the curvy arrow.
Me (Lightbulb): Does it tend to happen when you're going around corners?
She: Yeah, it does! How'd you know?
Me: That's the traction control....

GF refuses to read ANY owner's manual, whether for her car, truck, riding mower, cell phone................

Yet they have no problem spending 3 hours sitting in a chair for a mani/pedi. I asked her once why she didn't take an owner's manual with her and read it while sitting in the chair. I got "the look".

LOL, the first thing my wife does is read the fine print, word for word. She'll read the owners manual for a rental car. I'm like, what does this button do? She always has the answer.

Wife wanted to drive my car one day. I tell her OK, but it's almost out of gas. When she got home:
Me: Did you put gas in the car?
Wife: No, the light have came on.
Me: My car doesn't have a light.

I didn't make it to the gas station.

Be happy she lets you know anything at all. I have Traci trained pretty good, she is on top of stuff .
I get women in here ( well, sometimes men too) that just drive them right up to the point of failure. I had to put a motor in a 330 this winter. Serpentine belt broke, temp light came on, alt light on, kept driving, overheat, steam shooting out everywhere, still kept on driving, oil light came on, still plowed it, and almost made it 35 miles home without an alternator/water pump belt.
Total loss of voltage is what finally shut the car down, but when I got it restarted, it had blown a head gasket, and was making all sorts of ugly noises.
In all fairness to her, me , even being in the business, I sometimes have to look up what a certain warning light is . Have you ever seen all the possible warning symbols in a newer bmw?

The car is smoking.....when, well when I run it hard when it hot out. Have you let it idle afterwards, ya know it has a turbo? No......new turbo.

Glad I'm divorced and not in prison for strangling her ass.

When I used to sell cars we had one woman bring her car back for the same thing. She drove like a bus driver - stop and go, no acceleration or deceleration. When I explained what it was she had a forehead slapping moment... Also had a guy bring back a car because he said it made some awful noise when you opened one window at high speed. We explained he should open a second to equalize the air flow/pressure...

Our local college used to have a series of classes called "Moving On" that were designed to help women gain life skills (usually after a divorce) to help them cope with being on their own. Think about women you know who are 40, never had a job, a checking account, can't write a check, never looked under the hood of a car, never signed a rental agreement, etc.

I got to teach some automobile basics. I only got one afternoon per quarter, but we would get through the dash lights, changing light bulbs, how to safely jump start a car, how to change a tire safely, checking fluids and under hood safety, followed by changing your own oil. Usually had two or three students bring their cars in with oil and filter. We would change them together.

If you know what the lights on the dash mean, you can jump start a car, change the oil and know what to look for with "problems" under the hood such as leaks/worn/frayed belts, and can change a tire, you can prevent most service calls.

I loved teaching it and the college liked having me do the class. They said that the women would listen and learn from me. Plus I made everyone go "hands on." No one is going to this for you, you can and WILL do this yourself. Failed grade was refusing to try.

So true. And I bet you were GREAT at it, Angela.

Since she grew up on a farm Arden was handy. She had been mowing and helping me as a tool monkey when she was 8 or 9.

I told her that with the license to drive went changing a tire by herself, oil change by herself, identifying every visible part of the contents of the engine bay.

Taught her to drive a stick, tow and, every snow storm, how to drive in snow. She was a natural, I kid you not. She was almost too good.

This is me. I travel a lot and rent a lot of cars. If I can't find something or I don't know what a button does, I immediately pull out the manual. It's the first thing I do. I have been known to sit in the rental car parking lot for quite some time looking at the manual...

I carry around a tire gauge with me too in my briefcase. It only had to happen once where the low tire pressure light came on in a rental car...

It is extremely rare that I read an owner's manual. I'm more of a "what's this button do?" kinda guy and learn by playing.

When my wife has basic maintenance issues with a car (old honda overheating, brake light coming on--needed fluid--or other "easy things"), she defers to me. I've tried to show her what's up, what things mean, etc. Her response was, "I don't need to know that stuff; that's what you're for." Slightly frustrating. Ex-wife was the same, so maybe it's my fault...

Farm girls! Yeah! Married one.

Thirty years ago, we had a first gen Civic wagon.. She took it into the local garage and advised them it was stalling at the lights in town (a 7 minute drive from home).. They weren't able to duplicate it, so they basically just tried to tell her she wasn't driving it right.
Her response, "Did you even check the automatic choke from a cold start?"
They did. It was the problem.

Its not unique to women....Years ago, the Mrs gave me a Porsche Driving Course as a birthday gift. There were about 20 participants, all male, about 10 cars, and only two were manuals. Apart from two of us, all were on the course as a freebie from Porsche, for buying new cars. Aside from the fact that more than half of the participants couldn't drive a greasy stick up a dogs arse, just no idea- most of them couldn't even drive a manual/stick car. The one manual Carrera on offer was retired at lunchtime with a fkd clutch.

Instructors told me this was par for the course. It was embarrassing.
