Tree Identification

Any of the Pelican brain trust good at tree ID?
Here are a couple pics of the bark & leaf structure. The tree doesn't really have a canopy as it was in pretty dense woods and growing straight up.
Appreciate any help...

black walnut

I'm thinking green ash.

Baseball bats and great firewood, wet or dry.

black walnut bark and leaves. plus they tend to grow with no low lying branches. I've hand-planted thousands of them.

Looks like black walnut to me too.
Worth some $.

From my master gardener wife (who is willing to admit she is wrong):

Walnut family, either BWN or Butternut based on looking through 'North American Trees'.

Leaf structure favors BN.

Key is the nut, have to look at that.

agree on butternut now

Buckterrier 06-22-2014 01:25 PM

Thanks guys for the replies. Widgeon I think you've nailed it. I am actually looking for a hickory tree to make a bow from. Thought that was it, wishful thinking :(

just found this kinda funny...

I think its an Ash...

One leaf 9 leaflets

Ash Leaves

Bark

When we remodeled our Vermont house, we needed to have quite a few trees removed to allow the new footprint. A few of the trees removed were apparently Ash.

A few weeks after the land was cleared we received a check for $300 for three Ash trees...

Only in Vermont..

mreid 06-22-2014 01:52 PM

That looks like an ash to me. One fell on my house in PA. Fortunately only the branches hit the side as the tree was about 80 feet tall. Tree guy cut it up into several sections and took it away, chipped all the branches into mulch, and ground the stump for free. He sold the trunk sections and made good money.

Nostril Cheese 06-22-2014 02:51 PM

Looks like ash to me as well.

Buckterrier 06-22-2014 04:21 PM

I have an ash tree, (I think), on my property. It has 7 leaflets on a leaf which a black ash has. And the seed pods look like an ash.

Embraer 06-22-2014 04:36 PM

that's it then...a walnut wont have seed pods

matt f 06-22-2014 04:41 PM

Matt f is a dumbass. Oh wait, that's me.

Ash trees seem to drop branches quite often. Small stuff mostly. Look around under the tree. They're a bloody pain!

Good job Matt!

After considerable research (in this thread) I'm going to go with ash.

Really went out on a limb on that one ..............

javadog 06-23-2014 08:45 AM

Why kill an entire tree just to get enough wood to make a bow? Isn't it easier to just buy a piece of the wood you want from a hardwood supplier?

If it's an Ash, it'll be dead soon. They're all dead around here thanks to this guy:
