Anyone know about old Honda 2-stroke scooters?

I scored one yesterday! Was out with my wife walking the pup dogs and found one that had been put out for the garbage men. Asked the owner if it was cool if I took it to tinker and he said, "sure, that's why I put it out!". It's a (1987, I believe) Honda Spree, which apparently used a pretty common 50cc 2-stroker. It looks largely complete and the engine isn't siezed! Looks like it has some leaks and probably needs the carb cleaned up but looks like it'll be a neat little grocery go-getter. Not worth much but it's more about the find than the value on this one. Best part is my wife is more excited about than me because she's always wanted one. Will tear into soon and see what it's gonna take to get it going. Will deal with cosmetics after that.

Here's the "pic or it didn't happen":
Sorry it's so crappy... I was gonna take it before I pulled the V-dub back in the garage but forgot...

Yup its a spree worked on many of them back in the day.

Clean the gas tank, oil tank (it is oil injected two stroke), clean carb, new battery and plug

As long as you have compression and spark it will run they are bullet proof and simple.

If you want it to really go take a long screw driver and punch a bunch of holes in the diffusers for the muffler

I'm hardly an expert, a girl hocked one late last year and didn't pick it up. An '85 Aero 50 with 1500 miles. It ran when I took it, I put mirrors on and straightened the turn signals.
I'll do the screwdriver trick if it makes it go a bit faster, right now it does 35mph pinned downhill.

I had a 125 Aero.

it was a POS and all I ever did was tinker with it.

Get a factory manual as they have lots of great info and they're cheap.

Thanks for the advice, particularly on the muffler. I plan on cleaning the tanks and carb, etc. I can't imagine it not having compression but who knows.

Yes, I've read they are really slow. As tempting as it is to use the screwdriver in the muffler trick, maybe slow is good... this thing is pretty tiny and I'm over 6'... Plus my wife will probably ride it most of the time, not that she couldn't handle it but perhaps she should get her feet wet before we start doing "performance" mods

Already downloaded it for free... Found a link off of the hondaspree.net or whatever the forum is... which was awesome... it's like Pelican for dorky scooters.

I don't know why I find this thing so exciting but I do. Maybe it's the prospect of simplicity and cheap parts for a change to get this thing going.
