And a River Runs Through It!!

Cannot believe my luck! My cousin is overseeing some construction projects up in Montana and he has invited me up for a fly fishing trip! I will be flying into Missoula and then he will pick me up with his car and we will drive up to Kallispell where his project is going on. He has meetings one morning until about 9 AM and then we are free to fish for the next three days.

I have set up a guided trip on the Blackfoot river for one full day and we are planning to try and fish ourselves without a guide the other two days.

Anyone been up there? Any tips on fishing locations or any specific gear to bring? I'll be taking my 5 weight rod with a standard weight forward floating line. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403616949.jpg

That is so cool! Color me green with envy.

I spent a lot of time two summer ago in all parts of Montana doing R&D work with unmanned aircraft.

We flew a lot out of Whitefish, where one of the guys who got in with the State lived.

Just fricking awesome.

Enjoy!

Jim Richards 06-24-2014 05:42 AM

Rick, would you or your cousin adopt me?

Have a great time!

Rusty914s 06-24-2014 06:08 AM

Wow, so very cool. Be the level headed brother.

Awesome opportunity... I'd love to try out fly fishing

Man, with a spot like that, no matter if the bite is on, nice pic!

LakeCleElum 06-24-2014 06:58 AM

Luv Montana..........Thanks

Montana is great! We're hauling our dirt bikes to Butte next month for a few days of riding. I wish we could have made it for July 4th, but had to settle for Evel Knievel days. Last year, Independence Day weekend is awesome, most fireworks I've ever seen. Don't forget the pasties.

craigster59 06-24-2014 07:47 AM

Your 5 weight rig should be just perfect for Montana. Take along an assortment of streamers, drys and nymphs in the usual patterns. I'm sure you'll pick up a few of the local specialties when you get there.

The only real change I've made to my equipment in the last few years is sunglasses with "readers" (so it doesn't take me 5 min to tie a single knot) and wearing a lanyard instead of a vest. Really lightens the load a bit and you still have your essentials (just wear a fishing shirt with pockets large enough for fly boxes, I like the Simms "Big Sky").

This woman makes the best lanyards... Lanyards / Accessories - Western Visions Fly Fishing Lanyards

These guys have good deals on fishing shirts... http://www.sierratradingpost.com/mens-fishing-shirts~d~335/

Bad ass. For fun show up with a big heavy action spinning rod with a huge reel loaded up with 20 test. A fist full of 3/8th oz spoons still in packaging rounds out the illusion.

I bet they don't let you off the plane.

Don't forget the Pautzke's "Balls O' Fire" and the treble hooks!

LOL, that would be awesome! Show up in the morning and meet the guide with a Zebco and a tackle box!

Cool!...love Montana as well! Great skiing there as well as the fishing!

OT but my late FIL was from Butte and was a good buddy of Evel Knievel. Does anybody know how he got his name? My FIL told me quite a few times..funny story!

Simply Lovely.

This is a section of the Blackfoot called the Cathedral. I fished it at dusk and the sunlight illuminated a fishermans fly line as if it were on fire. The rocks cast purple light over the water. That scene is forever etched in my brain. Magic.

My aunt lives on Flathead lake near Polson. Beautiful area. There are some great places to eat in Whitefish.

Holy Man!...beautiful scenes, all - brings back memories - I was raised in North Dakota and we fished in Montana and Canada many times.
.
North Dakota & Montana - two of the few remaining hunting and fishing frontiers in America.
.
Have fun!

5 Wt is the ticket For the Blackfoot. Pay attention what the guide tells you the tips are bigger when you catch fish.

The Fishing is really starting to pick up water is clearing. On the Madison Last weekend.

MT is heaven right now!

The last scene and several other scenes of The River Runs throught it was actually filmed on The Gallatin River south of Bozeman the Peak in the back is Storm Castle.

Nathans_Dad 06-24-2014 02:38 PM

Yeah, I have a sneaking feeling this will be the first of many trips up there to fish.

My main concern is that I won't be able to stand fishing Oklahoma once I've tasted the mecca!

porsche4life 06-24-2014 09:03 PM

Fishing close to home is still fun ND. I spent all day Saturday driving all over AZ chasing trout and only got this guy in the net http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/25/9usa7u2y.jpg

Check out Lees Ferry AZ for another future trip. There are supposed to be some monster browns up there. If you like catching rainbow trout you will love browns. They fight like a 10lb pissed off Striper. ;)

Nathans_Dad 06-24-2014 11:01 PM

Arizona is a bit far for browns, I can head over to Arkansas and fish several areas on the White River that have world class browns. That trip is next on the list!

Heel n Toe 06-25-2014 12:23 AM

I've been told that if one is headed to Montana, you need to include a decent pair of binoculars in your luggage if at all possible.

For trillions of reasons.

In the movie, wasn't it a red Folger's can full of worms?

Have fun, I grew up on the ugly side of the state but that is one my favorite corners of the world. If only I could convince the missus that the winters aren't "that" bad!

Nathans_Dad 06-25-2014 07:56 AM

Tell me about it, I've been threatening to move to Montana/Wyoming for several years. My wife says if we move up there it'll be so cold I won't get any action for 8 months! Maybe I should stay in Texas lol.

KNS 06-25-2014 08:44 AM

My dad lives in Hamilton, MT and states that many people move up there (from warmer climates) for the spectacular beauty and then pack it up and leave a few years later due to the winters.

glewis80SC 06-25-2014 09:38 AM

I love it up there...we bought some land outside Ashton Idaho several years ago..plan is to live there till weather is too bad for the wife then come back to So. California until it warms up again. The area is 45 minutes away from Yellowstone I can see the Tetons from the lot....I love it. Henrys Fork, Warm River only minutes away, I could post pics for days. Hiking to the top of Tetons this summer to spread my Dad's ashes..his favorite place on earth.

And Hamilton is in the "Banana Belt" of the Rockies.

I will own a place near Hamilton to live in the Summer. I will then return to Maryland for the winters.

A friend of mine lives in a small place in town, near the center of Hamilton. I also used to spend a few days there in the summer on my way to run rivers in Idaho. My best friend lived in Hamilton so we'd stop there on our way up and then back to Cali.

Special place.

ledhedsymbols 06-25-2014 01:53 PM

It's not "A River Runs Through it" but these are some photos from where I grew up at. It has a different kind of beauty compared to the western part of the state. All the same, I think it's a very special place. C'Mon, it has High School Rodeo as a sport!
It's in Southeastern Montana about 100 miles east of Billings and 45 miles west of Miles City near Custer Battlefield on the Yellowstone River. In a lot of ways it was a great place to be a kid. It's very different from how my kids are growing up, and I think they are missing something sometimes.

Forsyth_Montana_High_School_Rodeo_Pictures

Some more photos of the surrounding countryside. There's lots of it, and with only about 2000 people in town, it doesn't take long to get there.

i wish you guys would stop talking about Montana. We don't want any durn furners coming up here.

MT930 06-25-2014 06:27 PM

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403749455.jpg

Yes it is very cold and we have critters that will eat you. Great place to spend money in the summers, but no one in their right mind would live here.

Nathans_Dad 06-29-2014 03:10 PM

Ooo, it just got better! My cousin moved his meeting from Thursday morning to Wednesday night that week so we get a full day of fishing Thursday instead of a half day. Now he's set up another guided day Thursday in Glacier National Park. Guide said it was a 40 minute drive and then a 30-45 minute hike in to the back lakes. Guide says the fishing is stupid good back there because not many people want to hike back.

Plus a 45 minute hike through Glacier National Park won't suck either...
